Red Paint Most Expensive?!
Just got my 1x1 weave CF trunk painted today, and the body shop told me that red paint is the most expensive of all paint. Why is that?
Also, they had to through 5-6 iterations of test strips to get the color match. Why is it so hard? I thought that all colors are computerized based on the color code? Please edify me. Thanks folks! |

Yep I would say that its not as available due to MR's low demand..... However, I love the color...

MR is metelic, that may have something to do with it as well.
Hope they matched it ok, specially on a CF product. It always seem to dry one shade off.

I used to work at a body shop and I owned a red honda at the time (which I had painted there while I worked there). And yes, red is more expensive then most colors for some reason!

The reason red is more expensive is because the pigments used to make red are the most expensive. Paint is basically pigments suspended in liquid and those red pigments cost the most to manufacture.
It's nothing to do with metallic or availability, it's simple the way the world works. Yellows are also very expensive. You are SO lucky the body shop was smart enough to take the time to do those sprayouts. Most body shops simply make the color and spray the part without paying any attention to the match. But there are variations on many colors and the way paint is actually sprayed can affect what the color looks like. Painters MUST do a test panel (or sprayout) before they paint the part to ensure the paint will match properly. |

ask any artist - red is the most expensive color, be it oil or acrylic paint, ceramic glazes, etc.

Yes I am lucky but it costed me a fortune too. $600 for taking off the OE trunk, painting, and fitting! I did the installation myself. |

Actually silvers are generally the hardest to make look right on the car. There are tons of variables in painting and silver doesn't let you hide a damn thing.
