My impression: Dinan vs. Powerchip tune

Hi guys, I figured I would tell my story... I drive an 08 e93 m3. absolutely LOVE IT. I promised myself I wouldnt touch this car but I couldnt resist. .. My first mod was the dinan tune which when I first got it I felt an improvement, not a large one but somewhere in the nieghborhood of pressing the M mode button vs regular. after driving on it for a bit I became less and less impressed with the perfomance and started to wonder if all it really did was further improve throttle response and maybe a few horsepower in the mid range... Then the other day I was trolling on here and saw powerchips was doing group buy tuning in NJ/NY. I contacted them to see if there was anything they could do for me.

long story short I was approaching getting re-tuned again seeing how dissatisfied I have become with the dinan tune. We traded a few PM's and this morning I was off to get one of their 'off the shelf' tunes. They reflashed my ecu and to be honest I was somewhat skeptical that I would see any gains over the dinan tune on a basically stock m3 (I have the afe air filter). The powerchip guys flashed my car and sent me on my way. I must say this tune breathed more life into my m3!!

the very first thing I noticed was smoother acceleration when at part throttle. Also I noticed more power from 2-4k. 4-6k felt about the same as my dinan tune. Then once I hit highway and romped on it this car screamed from 6-8k , it pulled harder than my dinan tune.

I am very pleased with the tune, and very much regret the dinan tune. I HIGHLY recommend powerchips to anyone looking to get a tune, even if your car is stock! and obviously im sure there will be even more gains depending on your mods. I apoligze for not dynoing but for what its worth my butt dyno notices a decent increase in power over dinan and stock. Considering this is a NA car I wasnt expecting a noticeable gain but I am very impressed with the results. Thanks again to Mike at powerchips and all the guys at Powerchips and Broadway Performance for their professionalism and their knowledge/expertise.

If anyone is interested in the tune contact Mike Benvo at mbenvo@powerchipgroup.com

Yep, Powerchip's tune really shines from 6-8000 rpms. My car literally feels manic once the tach sweeps past 6k . Glad to hear you're enjoying your new and improved powerband .

Nice review - +1 a very pleased Powerchip customer. After 12,000kms the car just is getting stronger and stronger...

To Dinan's defense I think they deliver what they advertise, it's just they don't deliver much.

Had my car reflashed by Powerchip's Jeremy today @ Broadway as well. Very nice & smooth power delivery, yet the gain is very noticeable.

Thanks to all that have posted reviews of the software. I'm glad everyone is enjoying the added uumph.

People do not realize how much smoother the tune makes the car drive. I'm always telling people that it's not all about the horsepower numbers, but the power delivery and driveability increases too. Most don't believe me, but this is proof in the pudding!

For those who are unhappy with the tune they have now, shoot me a PM and we'll put a special price together for you. I had the DINAN software on my E60 M5 and wasn't too impressed with it, so I knew how Nic felt when we contacted me. Gave him a deal he couldn't refuse!

Cheers

just curious as im planning to purchase a m3 in oct, and wanted do filter, pulley, exhaust, and tune pretty much right off the bat. powerchip seems to be the best option in regards to what i want, now will getting the tune defeat the purpose of the idrive modes ( sport/comfort etc.) since it says it changes the throttle response or do the modes still work the way they r suppose to.

Not at all bro. Sport and comfort r not throttle modes, those r suspensions modes. The power button and the m button is what gives u the throttle modes. The tune improves all of them.

Just make sure u get whatever other modes u want first before u do the tune.

There are throttle changes to each mode. However, they remain fully function and you can clearly tell the difference between each one.

Does this tune address the bucking issue some DCT owners have when trying to accelerate quickly out of 1st gear. I've kind of learned how to modulate the throttle to keep it from happening but it would be nice to be able to just mash on the pedal on not worry about it.

How would I get a flash all the way in Hawaii?

It doesn't specifically address that. However, it's quite possibly caused by maps that we smooth out and modify, so I wouldn't be surprised if it disappears with our software.

I had one customer tell me that it took away low end bucking over speed bumps.

If you want to get the flash, you can mail your DME here and we will flash and send it back to you within one day. Alternatively, if you have a group of people in Hawaii that want to get tuned, we could take the trip out there and do it on site.

Sorry for going OT but can you describe the bucking issue in more detail?

Have you ever driven a manual trans car in 1st gear step on the gas and then let off suddenly. The car kicks back at you like a bucking bronco. Its like that except its usually in 1st gear either from a standing start or when you let off the gas and try to get right back on it. The car will repeatedly start bucking and the only way to get it to stop is to let off and let the RPMS get low or to shift into a higher gear to lower the RPMS.

I get the bucking feel too. It only happen in M mode for me. It is very violent and jolting feeling. It's very difficult to control because when you first buck, your foot is in a loop of slightly on the gas then off the gas very rapidly...which causes more bucking!

Well done Mike.

Nothing better than a genuine review like this and you talking about tunes and them not being just about horsepower.

Yup... Much like the OP stated... I had used one of the 'other guys' tunes at first too... and Mike w/ Powerchip has been awesome! His Service alone is bar none... but then the POWER & DELIVERY of the TUNE!!! I love my car MORE & MORE EVERY DAY!

Thanks Mike!
