replacing a rear tire

Hi guys,

One of my rear tire is punctured and needs to be replaced. my car has about 9k miles on it. the good rear tire still has about 6mm tread depth (Conti sports contact 3) My understanding is that a brand new tire has about 7-8mm tread depth, so do i need to replace both of them or just the punctured one? I was told by a BMW mechanic that the difference between the rear tires will be absorbed by the rear differential which is not recommended. So, i wanted to hear all your opinions. To replace both or just the bad one?

Thanks for any input.

Why can't he just replace one since the other tire has plenty of tread left?

I recently replaced only one front tire and my car rides just fine.

Because what we don't know is how the tire has worn. It may have 6mm of tread, but probably not evenly across the entire tire. I'm fairly certain that after 9k miles, there's some level of uneven wear. This is the main reason I always buy tires in pairs.

Obviously he can get just 1 tire, but I would at least make sure both are road-forced balanced.

Good excuse to replace all 4 with something that doesn't suck, and sell the 3 good tires
