991 Porsche S

Just got back from the Porsche Dealer to look at the 2012 Porsche 991 S. I must say that it is indeed a nice looking machine; the first thing I noticed was the longer wheel base with 20'' wheels and a lower stance, less over hang in the nose and rear, the rear quarter of the 991 has a look in my opinion of the Aston from a side angle, the interior is more of a luxury look than the previous 997 sporty look and feel; Very nice interior design taken from its bigger brother the Panamera. I must say the price tag loaded is way more than I would pay for a regular Carrera S ($130K ) but with 0-60 and quarter mile time .1 second off from a 996 turbo that commendable for a NA 3.8 motor. Any way overall very nice vehicle and can't wait for the 991 turbo.

I then decided to take a look at the Mercedes C63 AMG and I think Mercedes could have done a much better job of the design especially the rear, quarter panel back it's just not aggressive at all for an AMG only thing I liked about the vehicle was the motor but that alone did not win me over. Overall very bland interior and exterior styling.

I've never been a big fan of the 911 look but I, too, like the new design. I'm still pretty shocked at the sticker price jump in a reasonably optioned 911.

Test drove a Carrera S today. Nice. It was quick, 4.5 seconds to 60 and 9.5 seconds to 100. It would have been a sub 4 second car had the Sport Chrono option been included, which has LC. The PDK was crisp but I didn't like the the shift button in the steering wheel. I prefer paddles that don't rotate with the steering wheel.
Overall a nice car but too expensive, $112k with very few options.

So you didn't like it? Seems like a test drive is a gate way to buying, did you test drive knowing that you were NOT going to buy? Just doing market research?

I don't think I could do that, I feel like if I test drove a car like that, I'd be leaving with it and off the the pawn shop with my watches...

I just built one online based on what i'd actually buy...

991 S - Black -
-OE wheel (not a big fan of the new bigger wheels and would probably go aftermarket HRE, Modulare, ADV.1 if I decided I wanted more)
-Premium Package With Adaptive Sports Seats Plus
-Burmester Audio Package
-Park Assist
-Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control with PSM Sport Suspension
-Sport Chrono
-Interior light design
-Silver Grey belts
-Full black leather interior option

$117,965 MSRP - And I feel like it has everything it needs to be the quintessential P-car.

I omit Carbon brakes because whatever car I own see's extensive track time. Even the SUV's for fun or in rain.
I omit PDK because I like to row my own, especially at 7600rpm.
I omit Sport Exhaust because i'd rather get something aftermarket if I went that route.

Pretty expensive, but that is a LOT of vehicle for the money...A lot. I would, without question take a 991 S with these options over a

-Z06 Carbon (105k)
-BMW M6 (120k) 13'
-GTR Black (107k)
-Evora S (90k)
-XKR (115k)
-GrandTurismo S (145k)
-CLK Black (135k)

In fact the only car I might take over it, would be a car that offers that same "where do I sign" feel after you really drive it...

Vantage S (135k)

But due to it being at the end of it's model run, i'd probably go with the 991. I think the baby Aston is one of the most perfect 2+2 high end + hard core coupes ever built, but the 991 is a seriously precise tool.

I drove it just for kicks and wanted to play with PDK to see if I liked it. It was a dealer demo which I doubt could have been purschased had I wanted it. I'm leaning toward a 991GT3, when it arrives, if its price isn't too far above the previous model. I canceled my GTR and am getting antsy to drive a sports car because even a fast SUV is not a good substitute.

The pdk in the new 991 model is far more responsive than the older 997. It's almost as responsive as dct in the m3.

Really? So PDK would be considered a bit slower than the DCT?

I've driven alot of trannys, but yet to get on the road with a DCT

I am referring to the response time from the moment you command the car to shift And when it actually performs the shift not the actual shift speed. It's hard to tell which car has a faster gear change but the m3's double clutch is far more responsive to driver inputs. I know this because I own both cars and drive them both all the time. It's something that really pisses me off about my 911, my mdct is way better.

I'd take the Carrera in a heartbeat. Porsche has once again re-defined the sports car.

Not so sure, I'd want to say that on an internet forum.

If the price range was lower, i would consider this purchase but I can't see myself paying that much for a Carrera S. Nice car but overpriced for its class in my opinion. One thing I've noticed with the Carrera is that the price falls quickly when considered a used certified preowned but then remains stable at a certain price range; I think this will be the same for the 991.

That 991 is all kinds of sweetness

The e92M3 DCT is finally gone now I am free to look at other sexy cars: my dealer has both a 2012 Cayman R and 2012 Carrera S 991, I purposely waited till sunday to drive town and take a peak because I know I will drive home with one of the two once I get to drive them. Have crossed a C63 AMG off the list (to Honda-ish and really numb steering). Update to follow.

I'm planning on driving a 991 CS2: is a lot of money but if careful w/ options maybe $110k is do-able. Not ready yet to 'divorce' my M3 which I still love driving, but the hankering is there.

I'm in the same boat. I love my M3 and don't want to get rid of it especially since I did European Delivery. I'm just worried that by the time I am ready to get another car the value of the M3 will fall too much. The new 991S is being praised by everyone with the exception of the people that just bought a new 997 and even some of those admit it is a much better car than the old one. The C2S with better rims, Sport Plus seats, full leather, PDK and SC is enough and is about $110,000. I may go test drive the car but I don't see myself getting it for another year when the dealers may start dipping into the large profit they make on these cars.

$112k is very expensive. Honestly, I would rather pick up a pre-owned 997S or one off the clearance lot at the local dealership.

You say that, but 991S is as fast as a 997.2 GT3 around a track, and almost as fast as a 997.1(.2?) Turbo in 1/4 mile.. Also 997 interior will look very out dated compared to what 991 is offering. So you get a lot for your money.

On the other hand, I'd rather have a 993 C2S
