Thinking about buying an S2000

Ok,

I have e92 M3 6spd myself, macan for my wife's dd. We (or I mainly) are looking to add a fun, weekend car to play.

There is a clean, low miles 07 s2000 for sale in local dealership. I have been told the previous owner traded in for F type R. The color they have (black) isn't my top choice, but it is not a deal breaker. The price is descent (market price) considering some 01-03 s2000 has sky rocket price here.

I am a bit on the fence buying a 11 years old car, my other choice was either 981 boxster or M2 which are most expensive obviously. (my wife dont like m2 because they look similar to my m3 she says.... I somewhat kinda agree with her in terms of look. Although they drive completely different imo.) 981 BS would be better choice than s2000 but more $$$.

Obviously s2000 is older, has 35k miles (I like its low miles), outdated interior BUT cheaper, reliable, low maintenance cost (cheap to mod,) down the road.

I wanted to hear your opinions. Would I enjoy s2000 or so than or like my m3 do you think?
I don't go track but I actually plan to go track if I get the s2000. Life is getting bored, I want to try something new related to car.

I say go for the S2K...incredibly fun weekend toy, reliable, and will hold its value well. I hope to buy one in the future as well.

I literally just traded my 135i for an 01 S2K that was completely sorted and ready for the track.

It is an experience driving them, completely different from that of a GT car.

I'd highly suggest going to drive it....there will be a lot of people that hate on it for the torque but I find it plenty adequate. It's still faster than an FRS or RX8 or pretty much anything in its class. Faster than a Z4 around a track and the look is totally timeless. The 2001 S2K was actually worth more than my 09 135i, which is kind of shocking but fantastic because I think the cars are going to continue to appreciate.

Go drive it, beat the hell out of it on the track (my main purpose...N54 is either nuts reliable or constant problems in that setting), enjoy your car that is pretty much the easiest thing ever to work on.

+1 go for it. There is no downside if you can get past the low torque....you just have to have fun with it in other ways besides a straight line.....plus ladies love verts man.

Here's a couple pics of mine to make you need one:

And then you can tell people....

As much as I love the S2000 and would like to have one, clean ones get stolen too much. Cut the cloth roof and go. AP1s are stupidly overpriced and too many are banged-up. Paint work, undeclared accidents, theft, money shift. If you find a clean one and in good condition, take good care of it. I mean REAL good care of it.

Go for it. My e92 m3 is my weekend toy and honestly my beater DD is a bolt on 06 civic si and it's no less fun, sometimes more fun than my m3 down technical canyons by my house. I've been contemplating selling the m3 for an ap2 s2000.

WAIT. You think an S2000 is weird and needless...but you drive this abomination?

The X6M doesn't know what it wants to be. A car? A SUV? A Honda Crosstour?

S2000 at least is a PURE roadster with a rowdy, reliable engine. And it's not trying to be a toaster.

well, we have M2 available but then my wife wants me to sell m3 after I get m2. I really don't feel like selling the m3, it is in flawless condition and I just put new tires on it and I love it.

I test drove M2 and I actually very like it but then I really don't see myself having a 2 coupes in the garage. I would rather have different kind like a roadster.

yeah first world problem... i know if $ wasn't the issue, I would probably go with F type R or 991. Btw, my wife hates s2000 (she says it looks like replica of boxster lol and she hates it even more after I told her it only comes in manual)

I might be the minority... I bought the s2000 when it was brand spanking new... to open up the vtec u had to be pretty high on the power band... didn’t enjoy it that much. Felt too much like a crotch rocket... then again I loved my crotch rockets.

I preferred the mk2 Toyota MR2 as well as the Honda del sol as well as the cayman/boxters to the s2000.

Probably one of the least favorite cars I’ve owned...

As a former AP1 owner I enthusiastically support the purchase of a s2000. I posted this numerous times. The dumbest car thing I did ever was sell my s2k. I loved that car.

Plus, clean S2000 here can range from high $40k - $50k. It's silly. At that rate, I might as well save and look for an NSX down the road.

Im surprised they didn't wash the car before taking pictures. Seems pretty lazy to do, considering BMW right on the other side washes their cars rain or shine

Otherside of that automall*

Not fast? Better go hit some road course events. They are fast. If you mean in a straight line, of course they are not nor were they ever built to be. Easy to fix w/a s/c, turbo or V8 swap, though.

I almost got a Miata....then remembered I can still put my hair in an up-do and hit the salon with a 9k redline .

But really, 2 of the best roadsters ever made. S2K costs more, you get more out of the box, costs more to insure, etc. Miata has a much lower capital cost, slightly lower operating cost, you can run 13" tires like a champ, AND STILL get to the salon in style.

S2K -- do it, there's nothing to think about here.

S2000s are great handling cars and are very capable in the right hands. With just a little bit of suspension work, these become very difficult to chase around corners. Aside from it being tiny, there's really no other complaints you can have about this car. Classic styling, lightweight, high-revving 4 banger with dat vtec, great potential, etc
