AutoMotor und Sport magazine is reporting that the Chinese online magazine PCauto.com.cn has published pictures of a new Hybrid BMW car - that has applied for some Chinese patents. BMW also showed the car to a small group of industry insiders in the e-mobility field/meeting. PCauto was the first to publish the pics of the prototype.

The BMW car only puts out 10 grams of CO2 per kilometer(!) which corresponds to a fuel consumption of just 0.4 liters or 588 MPG!

The vehicle holds four people, you sit very upright like in an i3, it has a trunk which holds 348 liters of luggage, and has a wind drag Cd of only 0.18 The vehicle will tip the scales some 50kg LESS than an i3, coming in at 1200 kilograms. One kind of strange thing is the front axle is much wider than the rear(powered) axle.

For comparison sake... VW's XL1 concept car used 1.0 liter of fuel, had a wind Cd of 0.19 but only held two people sitting behind each other and laying down fairly flat. And not much a trunk(*******.

It's been reported(allegedly) that the car is powered by a 2-cylinder twin-turbo petrol allegedly only to generate electricity(ala i3 with a range extender). An electric motor on the rear axle is responsible for propulsion. This vehicle is not destined for production, but merely as a R&D tool. Its been speculated that the vehicle could travel up too a pure electric range of 100 kilometers and have a top speed of 180 kph.

Its still quite possible that parts of this platform will make it into future BMW i-cars. It will be interesting to learn more about this "test car" in the future.

It looks like an prius to me, with only more edges designed into the body line.
