School me on SLR Cameras

I know nothing about cameras and my girlfriends birthday is coming up and she has been wanting an SLR Camera for a while now. Just like me she knows nothing about cameras, she just believes they take superior pictures when compared to point and shoot cameras. She has always had point and shoot cameras. She just wants a camera that she can take on her trips and take nice pictures with she won't be needing anything special or fancy like high zoom lenses just the basics. What is a decent entry level camera with a price range of $200-$450. Like I said she won't be doing anything special with the camera aside from taking pictures of our trips I am sure she could care less about apeture abd shutter speed control as she would not know how to play with them.

I highly doubt you can get a slr for 250$... Might want to up your spending cap a little. But check out the nikon d3100 or canon t3. Little higher in price but still around your price range

If you don't care about buying used, then this is a great deal.

I have a D40 myself with a few lenses and its perfect for amateur photographers who aren't shooting professionally but at the same time want to still produce great quality photos.

If she doesn't care about interchangeable lenses or any of the other features, you should stick to the P&S in my opinion. It's also a lot less bulky if she will be carrying it around in her purse. I would recommend the Canon S100, which is one of the best P&S cameras out now. It also has a lot of the manual features of an SLR so she can start learning those and get acquainted with the controls to upgrade to an SLR later on.

These days point & shoots have high resolution and some of them have improved low light performance as well. If you're not buying a few nice lenses, the only major difference you'll get with an entry level digital SLR is probably the depth of field. SLR and lenses are heavy to carry on a vacation, and by the time she's done fiddling with the settings and gotten one good picture, other people with P&S have taken 10 pics and moved on.

The Canon Rebel T3 is a good entry level camera. It will have the advantages and disadvantages I've already mentioned. And you will also need to look at which kit lens it comes with, to know what situations/distances it's best suited for.

Get a Canon Rebel T3

She will love it, remember its a gift so a P&S wouldnt really cut it.

I spent a good chunk of change a few years ago on a nice camera, I never use the damn thing because it is so bulky that it is a pain in the ass to drag around. If she isn't serious about learning how to use it you will have a few nice pictures of your dog and an expensive dusty paper weight.
