All current production BMWs are using the new reservoir (sans M3). The new unit has a slightly improved venting system.

Here's a shot of the revised version on my M3, which sees regular track use.
Do you have part numbers? For the new part?

You should be able to walk into any dealer, find a 3 series, pop the hood, and if it has it just get the VIN number off the car. Then any dealer parts counter can get it for you.

P/N: 32416767161, (#1 in diagram), about $30 from your local dealer and fits within the OEM bracket.

The M3's return line is a bit smaller than the reservoir's, so a step-adapter is needed - which can be obtained at any local auto parts store.

Well here's what I did.

Parts:

* Rear brake fluid reservoir from the BMW F650GS PN# 34 21 7 706 055
* 2 feet of vaccum line (Napa)
* 90° fitting is a 5/32" elbow connector PN#9873 (Napa)
* 1 M6 bolt (+ M6 washer)

Total cost: less than $40.

Notice the logo on the cap? Yup, Brembo!

Also notice the nipple on the cap is angled so it fits perfectly bolted to the ground bolt thingy on the side of the engine bay without bending the line.

I used a little under 2 feet of line just so I can unscrew/screw the cap without disconnecting anything.

I'll find out next weekend if this setup works as expected.

kaiv, thanks for the info.
Any info on the bolt? This is a must do.

Important note: I just realized there is a seal in the reservoir. You want to remove that seal. Just open the cap and pull it out with plyers. This is only meant as an overflow tank and the PS system still needs venting to function properly.

Aus: the bolt I just found in my box of misc random hardware. Any bmw bolt with a 10mm head should work provided it's not too long.

^ This is a great idea!

To create an air vent, could you just puncture the top of the black on the overflow reservoir? I doubt that enough fluid would backfill that distance to actually overflow that container...

I'm definitely going to get these parts. This has been a recent source of frustration after every track day.

Thanks!

Yeah I thought of that and that would work fine (as far as venting), the issue I see with that is not fluid filling the little tank to the point overflowing, but rather the pressure/heat creating a mist that could potentially dirty the engine bay out of that hole just like it did out of the original reservoir cap.

I want to say it's unlikely given the length of hose I'm using but either way I don't think it's necessary to poke a hole in the cap. I blew through the hose to check venting and there is (with cap tight and seal removed).

In any case I will be testing this setup on Friday and will report back!

The little tank should also have venting, at least mine does. There should be a hole in the screw thread when you remove the cap.

Don't puncture the top of the black top. That will just allow potential contamination. Remove the seal as mentioned.

OK. But wouldn't the hole in the original cap also allow contamination? Seems we would just be making that pathway a lot longer with the extra tubing...

I will order the reservoir and remove the seal as was suggested. Looking forward to beating this problem. Thanks.

I am talking about a hole on top. Don't pull a hole on top.

How does that solve the problem of overheated PS oil and possible damage to the pump? I'm more concerned about the possibility of a PS pump failure than with keeping the engine bay clean or not having to top off the PS oil.

I tried this, but there is no venting in mine... it is airtight. Hmmm...

Took my car to Chuckwalla last weekend (~100 degrees, half hour sessions etc) and I'm happy to report that the catch can worked exactly as expected! No mess in the engine bay!

Here are photos of the reservoir with the number on the bottom of it and on the cap. I hope this helps. And also a photo of the whole in the screwthread thread.

This looks like a good solution. My last track day resulted in oil all over my right fender.

I guess I will just need to keep an eye on my oil level to make sure the pump doesn't get starved.
