Toyo R888

For what it's worth, I thought I would give my 2 cents on what I thought about these tires, and see what the more experienced folks on here think.

My car is a 2012 M3 ZCP with camber plates and square set up on wheels as the only real mod. 19x10 at all four corners.

Because of my 19 inch wheels, I had limited options on tires. I tried the R888 for the first time this last weekend at Barber Motorsports.

I have to say that I was a little disappointed with the performance compared to my Yokohama AD08R's.

The R888's had more grip under braking, but all the other aspects seem similar. Cornering speed was about the same as the AD08R's. My ability to put power down coming out of the corners seem about the same.

The R888's were able to maintain performance through the entire 30 minute session if I didn't over drive them whereas the AD08s seem to last around 20 minutes before getting greasy.

My best lap time was the same on both tires 1:48....although I have to admit that the R888's did that in much hotter temperatures (90's)

Were my observations valid...or am I in left field?

Unfortunately they are the only r comp tires that I have used and I bought them used as well (not the best condition but they were on the track wheels I bought). I thought I would add my experience with them. What I did like is that they felt great at the limit. I had a good idea of when the tires were giving out, which I have heard is not the same on a lot of r comp tires. At my level that is something that I really appreciate

Thanks for the feedback.

What size R888's did you go with on the 19's wheels?

Also a 30 min session in 90 degree heat would kill any street tire. The fact that these held up is actually rather incredible don't you think?

265/30/19's

You're right..they did hold up quite well considering the heat.

I suppose I might have had some unrealistic expectations.

What pressure were you running your 888's? They are very sensitive at hot temps.

They don't like pressures above 34 hot and I typically run between 31-33 hot.

Also, the tires like a lot of camber and they should last you about 25 to 30 heat cycles.

Started with 33 hot at all four corners, and I was having issues with oversteer coming off the brakes at the apex...right before going back to power.

Added the 3 psi to the fronts, at the suggestion of someone at the track, and that dialed out the problem I was having the the oversteer.

I'm running -2.6 in front....tire temperatures were 25 degrees hotter on the inside compared to the outside...seems to suggest that I have enough camber??

They do very well between -1.5 to -3.2 degree camber, depending on the car, side loading, etc. I don't have experience with them on the BMWs, but I have used them for 9 years, and they are really great tires. NT-01s and Trofeo R are probably better if you can find the sizes.

They also perform best between 31 psi to 37, above 36-37 not so good. I used to get over 50 heat cycles on them, but with lighter cars. They are sensitive to track temp, they perform, but get a little more slippery.

I don't think your observations are off. I'm running my first set of R888, after having run NT01s, PSCs, and Hankook Ventus, and they seem to be a bit of a tweener. Better than a street, not quite as much grip as something closer to slicks. My personal fav, like many on here, is the NT01, but they can be a challenge to find depending on when you are buying. If tirerack carried them, that's all I'd buy. Based on my experience with the R888 so far, I'd agree they have bit less grip than say a NT01 and squeal more, but will likely last longer, do better on a slick/wet track, and do better job of lasting a hot 30 minute session.

I'm buying a set of apex 18x9.5 from someone I met at the track who no longer use her's.

Will the 275 NT01's fit ok?

Some information to pass on: apparently Toyo changed the composition of the R888, and now the recommended hot pressures are between 38-40 psi
