If you're new to this you really can't go wrong with any of the entry level DSLR cameras by Canon or Nikon. Canon Rebel XTi (400D) or the Nikon D80. Canon just updated the Rebel, so the previous version 350D (Rebel XT) is a smoking deal right now if you want to get a starter cam.

Make sure you want an SLR and not just a really good camera. The main advantage is interchangeable lenses. As Nikki can demonstrate, you don't need an SLR to take great photos.

A friend of mine bought an SLR just to get the best camera possible and it really wasn't the best choice for him. He only uses it in automatic mode and only uses the kits lens which is mediocre at best.

SLRs are about choice and control. Once you get into it, you will learn that the camera itself is less important to your photography than your technique and your choice of lenses. Buying lenses is addictive and can be expensive, so go SLR only if you're ready to starting dropping $$.

Finally, there's lots of good information in the forums at www.dpreview.com

I am toying with the idea of upgrading my camera. If you're looking for a cheap starter camera, my used Canon 300D might be available soon for eBay money.

Both Canon and Nikon have pros and cons..Go for the Nikon D200 or Canon 30D or Canon 5D. I chose Canon because of the L lens..the #1 choice for professional photographers If you're true baller, you can always go for a nice Mamiya or Hasselblad H3D

From my own experience Canon have less noise then Nikon, but images appear a bit softer. Nikon has somewhat sharper images, but more noise.

I use a Nikon D200 now.

Depending on your lens collection if you started it out with Nikon and then stay with Nikon otherwise switch to Cannon.

You can buy a very nice car instead.
But w 39MP, you can print it for a large scale billboard.

I use Canon SLR now. Pretty happy with the performance and all. Can't really switch brand since I invest too much already on lens and others.

1 brand that worth considering for a starter is Sony Alpha SLR. Sony got all the expertise from Konika Minolta since they bought the KM Camera division. This makes them into the Big 5 SLR of Japan (Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, KM now Sony). Good thing is that they're closely related to Carl Zeiss, qouted to be the best Lens maker in the world. & It's confirmed that Carl Zeiss will make lens for Alpha SLR in the near future. This means you don't have to buy those highly expensive Contax SLR to get Carl Zeiss quality.

Sony just came out with only 1 SLR model (A100) but with all the fund they got and their strong brand name, believe me, they will sky-rocket in no time.

Only problem is, real Carl Zeiss cost an arm and leg compare to nice L lens with IS..Granted quality might be little bit better, but you're talking about high professional level. The rest of Sony's consumer Carl Zeiss are more of a marketing thing then getting the real quality stuff (ex ..P&S cameras..)

Can't really tell until it's out and the reviews are there. They might make it more affordable for Sony lines of SLR (subsidized by Sony maybe ). I read the Sony press release, I think they are very serious into this SLR market. So I really think Carl Zeiss will build the real high quality lenses for Sony. Maybe Contax lens with KM/Sony interface?

Sony P&S cameras are pretty good I think. Only thing I don't like about Sony is that they monopolizing the memory type they are using (Non standard Memory Stick).
