This is getting ridiculous

Sorry for being a little off topic... but I wonder how M division will respond to the horsepower war. What's next... a 600bhp M5?

Mercedes already has the 600hp+ S65, C65 and SL65, so this is really nothing new. Though admittedly this is in a different (smaller) vehicle segment than those.

BMW will continue to stay competitive in performance, even when not on the spec sheets. Whether they will have to resort to forced induction next time around to do so remains to be seen.

Also that car is sure to cost 100k+.

It looks fantastic and I love the ceramic brakes option, but its not actually faster than the M5 Touring... And it also weighs more (2025kg vs. 1955kg).

It looks like it only took Audi two years to achieve what the M5 has, and also at a higher cost... :-/

I noticed that too, Procure. All that extra power and torque, and still barely keeping up with the M5. Like I say above, BMW will compete on the track, not on paper.

i remember reading a rumor a while back that the M5 out today is under tuned and that when they were planning a face lift there would be a EMU flash and power would be increased, did anyone else ever remember hearing that?

If that was the case, wouldn't dinan or some other aftermarket tuner have done it by now?

Hamann already did it. Their version is 560HP and an additional 54 Nm of torque. Top speed limiter was also removed and makes the car approach 200MPH.

I always thought a 500bhp sedan is a little over the top, and a 600+bhp sedan rather redundant. More power -> more weight -> more power..... quite a vicious cycle.

I would prefer the next M5 keeping to 500bhp, but reducing its weight by 200kg... improving fuel consumption, better power delivery with a broader spread of torque. It should perform and handle way better with its reduced weight and teach over muscled and overweight Audi and Mercedes how to do a super sedan .

Wow! It is amazing how fierce the competition is getting with these power numbers that are being put up. There is some incredible engineering happening throughout the automaker market, especially in Germany at the moment. This is truly exciting. I can't wait to see BMW's, more than likely, incredible response.

Too bad these vehicles are way out of my market range. Thankfully the 1-series comes out soon.

Does anyone else feel adding more and more horsepower is just a lazy way of doing things?

I can see BMW keeping the M5 engine close to what it is now, but make the car lighter, which will do more good for the overall package than 80bhp would.

Yeah, I'm sure BMW is just being lazy. I doubt they put any effort into weight savings.

Compared to which car manufacturer? AUDI? MB?
Of course they do. Thats why they have CSL versions.

According to Jean Todt, Ferrrari's president; "a car's performance is not about HP alone, it has more to do with balance, agility and the relation between the car and the driver".
over the years with improving technology we have gained a lot of HP, hence speed. But what the cars have lost is feel and sensation. Driving an old 60s British sports car like an austin Healy or a 70s or 80s 911 makes you feel like you should be wearing racing gloves even though by today's standards these cars are very slow.
I really don't think it has anyhting to do with laziness or not knowing how to manufacture a fun driver's car. It is more a business decision ruled by marketing based on customer's needs to generate profits.
The affluent bunch with the buying power is generally older, the majority don't even have an idea what an apex of a turn is let alone attempting to take the right line out of the freeway exit or doing canyon runs. This bunch prefares pointing to buttons and telling the passanger "by pressing this button I can add 100 more HP or can set the car in a race set up". Car companies are selling bragging rights not driving pleasure.

I think manufacturers just choose the most cost efficient way of doing things. Under today's regulations, that happens to mean that its easier to increase power than it is to decrease weight in most cases. Now if CAFE suddenly shot up to say 30mpg, you might see weight reduction become a lot more popular. Of course, you'd probably also see a lot of cars get a lot slower too.
