Those headers look awesome. The new motors in m cars will be different yes but you cant deny they will be just as brilliant.

Than they bumped up the displacement to a 2.2 which gave it 237hp. 107hp per liter. Lastly the power band is nowhere close to the same... Not even close or worth comparing.

FYI I owned an 06.

I find this so bizarre a statement it really blows my mind. Have you ever driven a M3 with this engine? The response is sublime; the thrill is in the ever increasing revs. While the FI engines start strong, there is none of that wonderful rush to the top that you get with a high-revving NA motor.

This is like asking if anyone would really prefer a Ferrari 360, 430, or 458 to a FI car with more torque. What?

Matter of fact it is time for BMW to make a track focused NA M3/M4 and daily driver FI M3/M4. A la...the Boss302/GT500 and GT3/Turbo, etc.
I like where you're at, but that would require too much R&D

I keed. You're dreaming if you think BMW is catering to 'the little kiddies' though. There's a reason everyone is going F/I.

Thank you! Grabbed them all, including the slightly less cool spark plug and other engine pics you didn't link to.
Such high res!

There are some pics not in that press collection though, for any one who's collecting:

I actually have all the S54 versions in full res, but not sure if I should post them here since not e9X content. Been reprimanded for posting e46 content in the e9X section before

I like that idea. Too bad the M division lost its balls somewhere down the road and would never dream of making a hardcore car anymore.

this is such a beautiful picture of how they designed this amazing engine, personally i am sad to see FI come into play instead of the //M traditional NA roaring engine

I hope long life, for these real M-engines. Bmw motorsport division is official dead, when last E92 M3 runs away. What older engineers, who build M88 M1 super engine, Brabham I4 over 1000bhp F1 engine and E30 M3 Dtm motorsport car will say these chipped N-series motors which badged on "M-engines" ? They cry lot before they go sleep..."///M, only marketing"

I will kinda miss the NA engines now that the new M cars go FI. There is just something so epic with high-revving NA engines. The character of the engine was the top reason when deciding to go from N54 (with mods) to S65..

When thinking of going from the Z4M to the 335, my first reaction was kinda -"is this it?" when it comes to the rev-range. Sure there was a ton of torque and have to admit that the sound of the turbos was quite nice but still when comparing the overall experience, the S54 and even more the S65 just steal the show.

I'm feeling a bit sad to see the direction where the new cars (not just M cars) seem to be heading. It just feels like an end of an era, as someone here mentioned.

For me, the E92 M3 just seem to be kind of a keeper...

And it is certainly not because FI delivers the best driving experience, but rather due to government mandated fleet fuel economy averages. People act like FI is new; we've been here before. FI emerges during times of recession and high fuel costs; the relative hedonism of high-revving NA re-emerges as the cycle continues.
