To be fair to the OP the availability of the new M3, for whatever reason, is much better than it was for previous M cars. To have a new model M readily available at MSRP or less within a couple of months of launch is highly unusual. Blaming it on the "recession" doesn't explain the Mercedes C63, which is in very short supply and is a logical competitor (maybe not on an M3 forum, but in the real world). Maybe everyone is saving their money for a GT-R

I wouldn't bet on it.

A $65-70K Sedan with a manual transmission is a hard sell in the US. Period.
That's probably what the majority of those cars are.... and I agree, that's quite a selection, since the car was just launched a few months ago..... C63 FTW!

Just so we are all on the same page...everyone should understand that cars sitting on dealership floors have already been bought and paid for by the dealership via invoice price (cost for the dealers). BMW already has their money....dig?
Also, who wants to spend 70K and buy a dealership floor model...specced by the dealership and abused by heavy footed test drivers..... Wouldnt most of you agree that the majority of buyers willing to spend 70K on a new sports car want to spec the car themselves? How many BMW dealers are in the US? My guess, a lot! We are still seeing the dealer specced cars sitting showroom floors. Why buy one of those when you can custom order your own... Jason

Although there are some mitigating factors I don't think anyone can argue that the situation is not different than with the launch of the E46 M3. The car is more $, the economy sucks, there is a much greater car supply (by BMWs design) and the premiums (mark ups over sticker) although they existed, are all but gone. This car will be around for a good 6+ years and I have no doubt BMW will reach their sales goal of 100k cars. Certainly the state of the current demand for the car has absolutely zero impact on the quality, performance and value of the car, it is what it is, a great car no matter what current supply levels are. As well it will be cool to have a more rare car, at least if only for a while.

I think soon as people who don't follow the M3 and know it's out with a new design start seeing them on the road it will sell more (many people are still surprised when they see my car and they had no idea BMW just re-did the M3)

Like someone mentioned before Americans mostly hate manual cars and the bulk of the M3s currently sitting on the lots are manual. DCTs fly off the shelves.

I think in a year I'll be able to pick up a slightly used (<10K miles) 08 M3 Sedan 6 MT with the $12K in options I want for <$50K. Now THAT will be paying to wait.
BTW, since oil is >$135/barrel now, and some projections have it going a LOT higher than that, the whole 14/20 EPA figures definitely don't help the M3's sales numbers.

2nd thought totally incorrect. This topic has been discussed a great deal here (mpg). Most M3 drivers would like to to be better, appreciate the great engineering it takes to get it but in the end it is quite far from a major purchasing criteria. |
