O2 sensor heater. Explain?

I have MIL lit up and I've read this code which keeps re-appearing every 2nd start (as described).

Can anybody please explain what this is and how hard/how to fix it? I gather that it's something with the O2 sensor but really not sure where bank 1 sensor 1 is, or how hard it would be to change out myself.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The sensors are heated so they warm up faster and thus begin working sooner. If someone changed an x-pipe on your car and twisted the 02 out without disconnecting it, the wires may have been damaged so the heating element stopped working. Or it may have just stopped working. I would just buy a new 02 and install it. If you are under warranty, the 02 should be covered. There may even be extended warranties on emissions equipment like 02s.

They are easy to change if you have a 22mm wrench (7/8 should also work). If it is the driver's side, there is a small bracket that you need to remove in order to access the wiring. 10mm for the bracket. And 8mm and 10mm for the shield under the trans. Obviously you need jackstands or ramps or a lift. You should be able to find a new one online for less than the dealer price. Many look the same but may not be so make sure you have the proper cross reference.

Sounds like a good project for this weekend. Correct me if I'm wrong but bank 1 is passenger side? How do you know this is underneath? Wouldn't pre-cat (or sensor 1) indicate it is part of the set under the hood?

Both sets are in the same spot. Pre cat and post cat. O2 sensors are under the car not under the hood.

I forget which bank is passenger side but a search should reveal the answer. Passenger side is even quicker to swap since the harness can be disconnected more easily.

I'm getting this error code as well, my research indicates it's probably the heater fuse (in the glove box fuse box). If all 4 of ur sensors are throwing codes this is probably it.

What I don't understand is how it could be blown, I haven't touched a thing. Does anyone know where I can get a fuse replacement on the cheap? Id like to try it first before I go replacing sensors

First, check to see whether your fuse is blown. If it is, go buy a replacement fuse at autozone. I doubt it is a special BMW fuse.
