Clutch slip???

Can the car overheat the clutch and go into the limp mode? Today i had an incident, I miss shifted into 3rd (at 140mph), and rpm went past 9k (this is my second time miss shifting in a looong time, and the first time wasn't that bad). After that the clutch started slipping like crazyyyy!!!! It would get to 7k, and then drop to redline in each gear... i let the car cool down for 10min, and tried again, at first it wasn't as bad (but still slipping)... after 20 minute drive, I got a full run (3rd,4th,5th) and then it started slipping again.....

Does this mean the end of the clutch, or some fail safe? Clutch wasn't slipping before, and was in good shape. I drive manuals for a while...

did some reading, is it possible that something is not fully releasing the clutch? ... but then again, I tried giving the car full throttle at 2k rpm in 4th gear, and up to 6k, there is no slip, car accelerates like normal. It just drops the rpm past 7k. Is it possible something got stuck?

read somewhere that if the clutch is glazed, you can try and drive the car normal for a bit and see if the glaze wears off... any of it true?

I would really appreciate help..

Hey , once the clutch slips,it becomes weaker. You are seeing a drop in higher rpms and it will recover and start going back up but not for long.
BMW computer could tell how many times the clutch slipped and at what rpm.
Replacing the clutch is not a big of a deal,is your car an 08 ?

It is possible that your clutch needs replacing chances are your flywheel surface is burned, might need replacing also.

I was trying to price it, and if I got with Spec 1, it's $1200 + shipping and 400 euro to do the work... so it's kind of pricey.

car is 08, but I can't find anything aftermarket... Spec doesn't make clutches for m3 anymore. So i'm SOL. Will stock clutch be ok with a SC?

The stock clutch is fine. We have run 650 HP+ on the stock clutch and when driven properly they hold up well.

They do go out a little faster when you drive like this

As Roman said, the stock clutch is the best out there if the car is driven properly.
I have a stock clutch on my VT3 and no issues.

I've been driving manual for a long, long time. The OEM clutch in this car is one of the most bulletproof I've EVER seen.

Thank you for all the responses... ^this here is what confuses me, before the incident the clutch was fine! Car has only 50k miles on it. I have never burned a clutch in my life. Please help me reason as to how a miss shift could have done damage? I was hypothesizing that the clutch took the load and just broke some spring in it (as I miss shifted at WOT instead of 5th to 3rd, and rpm went a tad past 9k). Does this theory makes sense? Or was the load too great and it blew some seal in the slave cylinder (it's not leaking on the outside BTW)?

I had scanned the car using ESS tool, and the code that came out was: 2B61 Gear Input speed sensor/slipping clutch. I reset the code, and the clutch became almost as it was before. Although under hard shifts it feels mushy again. I do not notice any obvious slips, but do see some flat sports in power, like mini delays in acceleration past 6k rpm (some are very tiny, and and a bit longer one around 7k rpm). 1st to 2nd hard shifts, i can't get it into 2nd. Under normal/spirited driving, there are no problems.

*I did have CDV valve mod right before the incident (that is why i miss shifted, i wasn't used to the shifting).

The crazy differential in acceleration between the engine and transmission probably caused the clutch to slip like crazy and glaze.

I told you this before but there is no way that the slave could be damaged by this. Once the clutch is engaged, the slave does nothing.

If a spring on the clutch was broken, you'd be able to tell.

Clearing codes does not affect how the clutch functions. Its mechanical so your mind is playing tricks on you already and you shouldn't be trying to diagnose this yourself.

You should take it to a shop. You'll need a new clutch, pressure plate and flywheel.

No spring in these clutches anyway.

Codes do not mean "replace this part". The sensor is noticing slip and doing it's job.
