Motor Trend Best Drivers Car Competition

Anyone read this yet? 11 cars pitted against each other in...

1) 0-60mph
2) 1/4 mile
3) track performance @ Laguna Seca

Cars were driven by Randy Pobst and Justin Bell (both very accomplished race car drivers).

The cars included were the Corvette ZO6 with ZO7 package, Lotus Evora, Ferrari 458 Italia, Audi R8 GT, Porsche 911 GT3 RS, Porsche Cayman R, Nissan GT-R, Ford Mustang Boss 302, Lexus LF-A, Mercedes SLS AMG, and BMW 1M Coupe.

The interesting thing is that they really hated the 1M Coupe. Randy Pobst, who rarely says anything bad, said that he has never hated a car, but he really really hates the 1M. (primarily due to poor handling, said it understeers far more than the M3 which already understeers too much). I think that's the first really bad review I've seen of the 1M Coupe. On the other hand, they loved the Cayman R, even more so than the GT3 RS.

The other interesting thing was the comment made by the Ferrari engineer who said that in Maranello, they have a super computer that can predict the performance of a car based on all of it's statistics, and based on the computer's calculations they cannot for the life of them figure out how the GT-R can be so fast. Funny. Regardless, the 458 is truly amazing, and was crowned king.

As far as the looks go..I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's so hideous.

Love the GT-R comment..

Like the one about Ferrari's zillion-dollar supercomputer simulator. Essentially, you dump a given car's vital stats into the system, and the simulator tells you how fast that car can go around a given track. "Knowing what we know, we can't figure out how the GT-R goes around the Nurburgring so fast."

I'm guessing you made that statement because you have a 1M? Have you meet him in person? He's an extremely talented driver with numerous race wins and championships, and a genuinely nice guy. He thinks a stock e9x M3 understeers too much and I agree with him but I don't dislike him for stating the truth.

Tell me more how wonderful RP is!

He is a douche based on his inconsistent biased comments, not because of what I own or have owned in the past. He says the 1M is under powered and "not a fast car" and he is used to 500+ hp cars. Sounds like an arrogant douchey thing to say to me. Plenty of other cars that are sub 500hp that understeer worse than the 1M that he doesn't "hate". Just shows he was not able to be obective whatsoever.

Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but that is the way I see it. And all of RP's friends, trolls and leg-humpers can repost this article a million times, it's not going to change reality or my opinion of him. Just because he might be a nice guy, doesn't mean he can't be wrong also.

I have not yet read the article, so I’ll hold off on a critique. One reason Pobst might have made the horsepower comment, was simply stating the facts. I have owned a couple of ZO6 Corvettes, and the M3 in comparison is pretty weak; not a criticism, simply a fact. And similarly, the ZO6 handling balance is much more neutral; doesn’t make it better

Hey, Metak! You're way out of line. I called RP a douche bag over a month ago!

Guys-stop hating on the man simply because you drive 1M's. People are entitled to their opinion. Simply treat that article as opinionated journalism and move on. Randy is an accomplished driver and I have yet to find fault with his reviews.

How about the M3?

I wonder how the E92 M3 would have done in this head to head test? I'm assuming that it would have been better received than the 1M?

Not sure, I cant say that I've driven all of these other cars.....

That's like me saying "a Z06 is not fast because I drive a Buggatti, I've just spent too much time in 1000hp cars", get it?

This is what he said in the same breath, same sentence:

So the 135i is 'not his favorite car', but he 'HATES' the 1M? Really?

If he had just share his professional critique of the car without letting his personal feeling clutter his assessment, I don't think any reasonable person would have issues with that.

This is odd. Because EVERY 1M review I've seen complains (or compliments...depends on how you read it) that its errs on the side of being a little too tail happy.

It sounds like an awesome car. I wouldn't buy a 1M for one reason...it's hideous.

Didn't hurt my feeling but apparantly it's a touchy subject for you? I am not a personal friend of his but I find his car reviews to be insightful and mostly spot on, at least for the cars I've driven. I haven't driven a 1M so I cannot say how accurate, or inaccurate, his comments are about the 1M.

Quite possibly it would have done better. I think the MT criteria for test inclusion is to pick cars that are new or substantially revised, so they aren't repeating the same review, and the M3 was last compared in 2008 (when the test was called "Best Handling Car). The 1M's inclusion shouldn't be read that MT ranks it higher than the M3 as best handling car, just that they hadn't yet reviewed it, and have the M3.
