License plate location

OK the camouflage is coming off slowly so the question is: Where will the license plate be located on the production car? Seems to me this (along with the final look of the rear diffuser) is the last real unknown on the looks side.

Just to be clear this is not a poll about where you want it to be, but where it WILL be.

Thumbs up

Perhaps this photo should accompany the poll.

Here's hoping this is the final design. The M6 rear bumper looks bad with the plate holder integrated.

Just to be clear, I voted on the trunk lid because that is where I THINK it will be. It is also the only logical spot since there is already a nicely designed trunk lid with the plate location integrated, and there isn't much room on the rear bumper cover with the vent for the exhaust heat that they want to do. The M6 is that way because the standard 6-series is that way. Now compare the 5-series to the M5.

Wow, 59%

Anyway I also believe the licence plate will be in the bumper.

Best regards, south

For those who are guessing the license plate will be integrated into the bumper cover design, what is your reasoning? What will go on the trunk lid in the old location? I don't see it happening. It just doesn't make any sense to put it there.

mainly what "car" magazine said..
there PS was based on 'leaked design info'.

also the mesh thing in the bumper just looks stuck on...
looks a bit suspect

also the tape/camo on the rear bumper on all the mules is so high up...
what else would be that high on the bumper?

Oh, so you're saying the mesh goes away and the license plate replaces it? I could see that, but not both the mesh and the plate together. The mesh seems like it would be more functional with the exhaust right there underneath though, plus there is already a provision for the plate due north.

Good discussion

Neck and neck here 9 votes each. My reasoning for bumper is:

-Size/location/retention of camouflage
-Design consistency. M3 was supposed to be an M4 for consistency with 2 doors = even model number. And BMW likes consistent design so "M4" should match M6
-Car Magazine (big egg on their face if they get that wrong - ON THE COVER)

However, the recent spy shots are causing some serious doubt!

Phoenix - Darn, I post so much I pretty much forgot that old poll.

BMW have used the perfect cover up IMO. A normal trunk and licence plate, just there where everybody would expect it. So no questions and remarks, it is so normal as ever.

Now a trunk is easy to replace, it can be done just previous to it`s final presentation. Off course we do not know what the definate shape of the bumper/trunk/licence plate will be, let us be surprised............................

If it`s gonna be the licence plate on the bumper..............................then BMW did some extraordinairy camouflage.....

Can anyone recall if BMW has gone to lengths like that (using dummy trunks, mirrors, etc...) on previous cars to purposely deceive everyone while the car was still driving around testing?

I was just thinking the same thing - I do not think BMW is trying to be sneaky or deceitful with their camoflage. I think what is visible is final.

In looking at small details like the headlights, the hood (not just the bulge, but the hood lines), the front spoiler, the mirrors, exhaust, etc., it is obvious that BMW is trying to make sure the M3 looks distinguishably different from its "lower" brethren. Whether the plate goes on the trunk or bumper is anyone's lucky guess, but it certainly would be another way to make the M3 look different.

Bump

Geneva is getting close. The poll is neck and neck and this topic is being actively debated on other threads... So I gave it a bump back to the top. Get your votes in.

I think it will be on the trunk but I hope it's on the bumper. It's a different look that really stands out to me and I love the way BMW pulled it off on the M6.

They didn't pull it off on the M6, it is a standard design feature of the entire 6-series line, which is why it will be in the same place as the current 3-series - the trunk.

See what Scott wrote over at GCZ:
"I WILL SAY ONLY THIS... when you see the new BMW M3 you will see it as a three dimensional shape rather than a photo-real image on a piece of paper or on a forum. While some will not take to what has been done it is something that does appear to stand out more rather than what you have already seen. And there you can judge for yourself how it looks in it's true visional state rather than a digital creation . But all this comes because of a reason and a reason that helps the car achieves it's goals in what it's purpose is for aswell as to distance the car visually away from the portfolio of the other 3er Coupe products."

So if he's right (he should know what he's talking 'bout), it WILL be in the bumper.

Best regards, south
