I can't believe this has gone on for 3 pages. 255/275 Michelin PSS for street, 255/275 Yokohama AD08 for street/track or max grip street. If you want wider tires, get wider wheels to properly match the tires. You can run wider tires on the ZCP wheels but it's a compromise.. I have tested 275/295 tires on both 9/10" wheels and 9.5"/10.5" wheels. They are a far better fit for the wider wheels.

I also agree that a separate set of wheels and tires for the track is best.

Toyo also makes the new T1S in a 255/285 setup..great tire running them now.

I searched around, and tirerack and my local dealers don't have it, but I'll keep checking.

1010tires has them at $309

Dave, since you ran both the PSS and 5P, how do these compare overall (wet, dry, cornering, etc)?

trying to compile some more info on this thread...

here are some 275/30f 295/30 r AD08's :

This setup is likely not for me, as the AD08's would be too heavy (with the same "issues" about sidewall and cornering mentioned thus far in the thread) for my tastes, but it does seem fairly square without much "bulge"

Here are some additional shots of the 295/30 PSS on ZCP:

square look, not much "bulge" per se:

some more:

275/30 on the front seems awful big for the stock front ZCP wheel. Wouldn't it be better to run a second pair of rears on the front with the 275/30 - the wider wheel and different offset would probably be better with that size tire?

the main line of questions the past couple of pages are regarding the 285/30 vs 295/30 rears...

I can't remember the username, but I do recall he had spacers on, which is insane on a 295 with 10" ZCP

I posted those pics to show the bulge (or lack thereof)...

I didn't have the 5Ps that long but I felt they were equal to the PSS. Can't comment in the wet as I never drove my M3 in the rain...thats what my beater is for.

The 5Ps had a nice stiff sidewall yet good ride and the tire felt OEM, as it should be since it was the OEM tire for the AMG cars.

Here is the Toyos for $253...

http://tirecrawler.com/shop/detail_t...FZFxQgodlEgAvw

I've had the Toyos for about 1500 miles on my 2013 and they are a very good tire, I'm very happy with them and would definitely purchase them again. Grip is in line with the rest and a very good stiff sidewall, I don't think they will wear as well though.

Are you saying the 5P has a stiffer sidewall than the PSS?

ps- thanks for the link, that's awesome

Only issue with this statement is the fact the OEM tires were stretched on the OEM ZCP wheel. A 9" wide front supports a 255 tire with no issues, its probably the ideal width of tire on a 9" rim, while the rears at 10" wide support a 275-285 tire that is ideal.

The GTS with its 255/285 setup seems to support this...

Dave
doesn't matter really, the issue is the change from how the car comes initially. if you add 30mm of width from stock on the same wheel, unless you run a MUCH stiffer tire, there is no way you wont have a loss in steering feel

IMO the m3 runs a stretched tire / wheel setup to maintain that firm cornering feel and its engineered into the car. the car is softly sprung and dampened, and is also heavy. if you run softer, less stable tires and no longer run a stretched setup, these issues will become more noticeable

Thats why I wouldn't go beyond a 255/285 setup on the OEM ZCP wheels...don't know if you are agreeing with me or not...

Dave
while the gist of going to a larger tire (ie, 275/35 vs 295/30) on the 10" rear ZCP rim is something we can all agree in terms of needing better support for the side wall, etc, and really needing a 10.5' or 11" to be ideal on a 295, one fact also bothers me:

the 295/30 has a smaller/shorter side wall, and thus it is considerably stiffer (specially when aired to 40psi) than the 275/35, which would theoretically mean that it would further enhance the sidewall support point of view, at least theoretically:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plus_sizing
Quote:
-Replacing an automotive wheel with one of a larger diameter fitted with a new tire of lower aspect ratio...reducing sidewall flex and--generally--increasing cornerning ability
-Larger tires improve handling and cornering, due to wider tread faces and stiffer sidewalls
http://www.caranddriver.com/features...d-tires-tested

this is just one test (out of many I googled) that show that doing a plus one or plus 2 (without increasing rim size etc) improves handling and lateral acceleration

So, what I'm hearing from both of you is that the stretch (or lack thereof) of the sidewall on a 275/35 has "better" effects than a smaller/stiffer sidewall of the same tire in the 295/30 size..... which is the $1200 question; I'm not 100% sold that this is the case, but I'm still studying this carefully.

I'm not 100% sure, but given that I'm currently on 275/35 on the rear 10" ZCP and have been for a while on many situations (street, track), I may end up just "testing" the 295/30 and see how it does.

I will report back and if not happy, I will change out to a GTS size (likely the 5p or T1 Sport) and see how it does in comparison....
