For the 6M, I have 500 miles on the car, FWIW:

Pros:
As everyone else said, 3rd Gear, Sweet, even with 5500 Handcuffs.
The Feel of the shifter is precise and very snickety (Good Thing)
The Engine seems to be made for this transmission.
Having True Control is priceless.

Cons:
Shifting could be shorter
1st Gear is LOW, LOW, LOW
6th Gear is not much of an overdrive 3100 rpm's around 80mph
Clutch is a little light and engages later than expected

Most of my cons come from not being used to the vehicle. My latest standard tranny is in a 08 Jeep Wrangler X, so when I drive the M, from that, the M feels FABULOUS. Yesterday, I was cruising the backroads and it really started coming together for me. The design of this car, the precision, the way everything works in unison. Power Button, AWESOME. The more I drive it, the better it is and better I feel about my decision to go with the 6MT.

Took a ride in a DSG car and was very impressed with how smooth and how fast it shifted. Much better than the last SMG car I test drove. I hated SMG.

Regards, Michael

I did, but mine is much improved now at 4k+ miles. BTW, in the current Road & Track test of sports cars on 4 different courses they commented that the M3 has the best transmission of any of them.

u got ur car 1 month before me and i have 8k miles. how do u only have 4k? u have another car?

my shifts to 2nd are fine. rev first to 4k RPM then switch, it's very smooth. but then if ur under 2k miles ur tranny will be notchy. it'll get smooth soon.

where's that SSK

I have a short commute and haven't taken too many trips. I typically put on less than 10k/year.

me too man. my G35 did like 11k in 2 years. my new commute is actually 1/2 my old one, but im racking miles driving everywhere. i usually get the new car syndrome for the first 1 or 2k miles, i'll be driving a lot, but with this car i cant seem to stop

yes, seemed imporved after first service, but still there. seems to also be less noticable when the car is warmed up - I feel like this car likes to be driven hard.

Nope... I'm used to it. I feel really weird when I drive an automatic.

I'm still trying to adjust my heel/toe acton on this car even with the power button activated. My last two Bimmers were no problem. This one seems to be giving me a longer learning curve. It feels like the throttle has a delay when trying to rev match.

1st is was too low. If I'm not focused enough, I'll get a little back-and-forth motion from a stop with power button on.

As with others, I looooooove 3rd gear!

I found no problem adapting from my '01 M3. I have the throttle in Sport as default. I have not noted any delay. I will delete the CDV at some point, but I think the impact is minor. You're right that 3rd gear is the sweet spot for many situations. Back road carving is 2-3-4 with most of the time in 3. You can also sownshift for 6-3 on the freeway for a quick spurt.

I wasn't referring to a delayed clutch engagement. This car doesn't feel like it needs a valve delete. It's mainly the throttle blip. It takes more of a stab to match revs up for the downshift.

I do rev matching all the time and have not had this problem. I'm not sure I even understand what it is.

Yes, totally agree. You'll get used to it though. Some say it becomes less notchy over time, I think its just that you get used to it. SSK may also help this a tad.

I posted this in the main forum, but this thread is probably more appropriate. I've read and experienced the "clunk" associated with M cars when disengaging/pushing in the clutch. I'm fine with that, since all cars have it. But I have another thing that I can't tell if it's normal or not. So I'm hoping 6MT users can chime in.

Basically I can feel the clutch friction/grab point when *engaging* the clutch after shifting to N. And I don't remember this in any of my other manual tranny cars. I just don't recall feeling (and even hearing the vibration) the friction/grab point when engaging the clutch with the shifter in N! Is this normal? I'd hate to go ask the dealer to look at it and waste time and also look like an idiot!

Never driven the DCT and probably never will. The 6MT is part of what this car is all about for me, shifting through the gears, using a clutch just completes the experience and that's what works for me...no interest in the DCT no matter how new the technology is or how much faster it can shift than I can manually (don't care) Another thought was I didn't want to be a part of BMW's "beta testing" on the DCT

Ditto - I 'd have to concur with that and add that while the overall shift action is pretty good, the throw could be a bit shorter...not enough to make me switch it out though

Try a SSK, it will resolve the long through issue for sure. I did as did several others and everyone so far is very pleased with their SSK.

Hmmm, I think you don't like the DCT!
