It's sad, some people just do not know how to respect high horsepower vehicles. Just because an M3 or a CTS-V is a track tuned vehicle does not give you the right to DRIVE it like a track car all of the time. |

My M3 still have to go another 500 miles till break in, so you all know unless break in service is done you can't tap the full potential of this car... So maybe the M3 that is said to be 15 cars slower than cts was also prior break in? Or maybe this M3 was driven by a girl or a nerd or whatever? So many factors to consider... I mean comparison should be done in equal set up? I mostly drive my M3 ZCP in middle lane within the speed limit and flow of traffic... and every stupid ass is racing me... for no reason getting in front of me... mostly infinities... they all think they win the "race" by 15 car length sooo stupid... I have nothing to prove,- I just go my way in a hottest BMW in the world with a hot girl sitting next to me... and could care less if some ugly caddilac or infiniti (all the same) thinks they are faster ... I'm just trying to go slower in a very fast car to enjoy my trip longer and I have a big smile on my face

I borrowed my friends CTS-V Coupe a couple of weeks ago and it's very fast. Its quite a bit faster than my M from a roll. When I got my M3 back it was very obvious the M is a better but slower car.
OP, you have white framed sunglasses don't you. I thought so. |

CTS-V is a sick car, but probably better described as a cheaper M5... kinda. Most reviews say the gearbox in the V is lackluster. But comparing to an M3 cause the price is comparable is valid, but really they are far removed from each other.
Where the M3 shines is in its on-the-fly adustments, like EDC, Mdrive, and the wicked DCT. Those features make the M3 a superior driving machine IMO.

Yesterday I caught a ride in a CTS-V at Monticello Motor Club for a few laps. It had nice power and brakes but it had a lot of understeer. I don't know how the tire pressures were set but I thought it would be more balanced in the corners. The M3 understeers as well but not to the level that the CTS-V did according to my calibrated butt.

CTS-V is a terrific car. But M Division said themselves they were not out to win the horsepower race with the E9x M3. They wanted to focus more on making a superb driving machine.
Unfortunately, most people keep comparing hp and torque numbers when they brag about their cars... Different strokes for different folks.

Another drawback to the CTS-V is you have to deal with GM Cadillac dealers, and their average customer is nowhere near what BMW's is.

one positive for the ctsv is that your dealing with a gm smallblock v8. pretty much bulletproof. my z71 truck has over 250k miles.

Whose fault is that? BMW has always intended the M3 to be a street car that performs very well on the track. And that's what it does. If 99% of owners don't take their cars to the track that's not BMW's problem.

He's obviously never been to a BMWCCA HPDE. There are a lot of M3s there.

God damn comparison threads!!!
Look, each of us is responsible for buying what makes us happy. The majority of Americans here in the United States, especially the older demographic, prefer pure American muscle (Vette's, Caddy's, Camaro's, Mustang's, etc). Everyone knows that these cars come with MOUNDS of HP and TQ at bargain prices. If your motivation is power, then, by all means, buy something that comes with A LOT of power. Somehow, people that really don't know M3's believe that it is supposed to be King-Ding-A-Ling on the road. Just because it costs a mint doesn't mean it is going to demolish everything on the road. If you know anything about German racing heritage, they do not race in a straight line; they are all about handling and precision. Do you think it takes more intelligence to design a sports car for straight-line performance or handling-performance? These German engineers are freakin' geniuses! Why do you think these cars costs so much compared to American sports cars? I am not directing this reply to anyone in particular; just wanted to make a general statement.

CTS-V is nice but I'd go with the C63 for power as well. In my teenage years I would have killed to have a Camaro or Mustang though.
