Has anyone else noticed how loud the synchros are?

At least I'm pretty sure it's the synchros. They almost sound like a supercharger. It's not really a bad thing, but I was just really surprised when I first heard it.

The only reason I think it's the synchros is b/c as soon as I push in the clutch, the sound disappears.

It quiets down quite a bit w/ the clutch depressed.

I thought synchros only come into play when shifting gears. At other times they should add no noise.

Roger that. Could be the throw out or pilot bearing...maybe it is just a noisy bearing if others are hearing it too...

How heavy is the M3's flywheel? If lighter, and single mass, it will transmit some noise, which would go away when the clutch is depressed. Just a thought.

I know the sound when the car is at a deadstop with the clutch engaged and transmission in neutral. I don't see how that can have anything with the synchros???

True, I hadn't thought about that. I'll try to get a video of it, I'm not sure what it is.

The clutch is dual mass and permanently attached to the flywheel. It's lighter than the M5/6 one, but not super light.

Throw out bearing could be a tad dry if it doesn't go away after some more mileage.

im going to use the G35 example again coz it's the most similar to M3's tranny: let me put it this way, in that car i had to push the clutch in if there are people around on traffic lights coz it does sound like a diesel car if i dont. that's how loud it was.

i think the M3 is about 50% as loud as the G. it's all normal in sporty tough clutches like that. u guys enjoy it, give it gas so the engine is louder than tranny

there are two kinds of sounds i ve noticed:

1) faint tick tick tick sounds when the car is stationary. it goes away when clutch is depressed

2) the supercharger type sound in low gears while the car is moving.

i think 1) is from the syncros because it sounds similar to when changing gears. not sure about where 2) comes from.

I see. Figures it is a dual mass...pos. lol. Well, the others may be on track that the throw out bearing is not lubed up well/saturated yet.

If the noise continues until the end of the break in period, I would have the dealer check it out. could be that it is just what it is, a noisy bearing...could be "normal" for the car. Time will tell.

The LSD can make some noise at low speeds...my car does that....esp. in reverse when turning...sounds like a bucket of bolts. lol. But it is normal.

There's a growl from the transmission mainshaft bearings that's audible in neutral with the clutch engaged. You can hear it in 5th gear as well if you're driving beside a concrete barrier with the window down. It's normal - just clearance in the bearings so they don't seize when they get hot. This gearbox runs hot enough to need an oil cooler (front RH side wheelwell).

The "supercharger" noise is the camshaft gears - this engine has one cam on each side driven by a chain from the crankshaft, while the second cam is driven off the first by a great big pair of gears on the fronts of the shafts. The oil pump is also gear-driven off the crank. Gears make a whining sound. Most people would pay extra for this noise - in fact, I did...
