I hate strange noises, just glad I have 2 years warranty with an option of another 2 years. I let the dealer worry about it! they always seem to find the problem in the end.

Well...end of story...the noise has stopped (at least for now)!! I had the dealer keep my M3 for a couple of extra days so the Shop forman could listen to it at on cold start up. They still reported that they couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary. So I picked up the car and when I started it the next morning (after sitting overnight) it still made the noise...much quieter than before though....since then I have tried 4 cold starts and NO NOISE I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hopeing it doesn't come back....strange though, I would have liked to know what it was. Anyone know if BMW uses a "break in" oil at delivery and perhaps puts regular oil in with the 1200 mile service...I'm probably reaching here - but something was causing the noise

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions and I feel very lucky to not have an on-going chronic issue with my M!!
