Would you upgrade?
Hi everyone!
I have a question for you guys, specially for people who upgraded their e9X M3 to the newer model one. So my M3 is an 08 one and I never had any problem with it (except one mis-fire engine which happened because of bad gas). I have upto September 2012 warranty and up to 2014 CPO warranty. I want to spend some money on my car (like installing new 3M, hopefully some modding,...) and I don't want to lose so much money on those and just give it away to the guy who will buy my car later. So my question is, would you consider swapping this car to a newer model (like a 2012, or 2010 or maybe 2009 model) next year? I am asking this especially from people who drove an 08 and have a newer model now. I know about the tail light difference which to be honest, I think 08 models have nicer ones (IMO). What about quality of built? I saw few threads about problems with 11.5, 11.75 ... models. Is the quality of older M3s (08-10) better than the newer ones? .... I appreciate any help.

If you're going to swap, I wouldn't trade one used car for another. You might end up with a 2 year old car with problems, even though it has warranty coverage. Might as well hold out for a new MY2011 with the new tail lights, ZCP, etc. Or hang on until Sept for MY2012.

I dont think quality is any better, i just think we hear more issues with the 2011s because they kept that model year in production for so long. Not many 2010s were even made.

What about the extra warranty I get by swapping the car? Wouldnt it worth it? Plus I can keep the newer car longer because of lower mileage ( mine has 40k KM on it now). Just saying it because I know I will not get the F32 M3.

Just keep what you have for now. Then if you still feel like upgrading later this year or early next year, get a 2012. We may even have some new info on F32 M3 by then as well, in which case, you may just want to wait til then...

Your questions highly revolves around MONEY. How much money you got???
I would trade your car in or sell it, and order a new 2011 or 2012. But you may not be anywhere near able to afford this. So not sure how you can ask a question like this without key information.

Care to expand on that? I'd like some opinions... I've been toying with ordering a new one in a color combo I'd really like, but I'm reluctant to take a hit on mine now, etc. I'm debating either an ESS kit for mine...or ordering the last Model Year (2012) of the e9x M3.

I am pretty sure money isn't an issue since he's inquiring about the trade.

keep IT, no need to replace for the same exact thing. not so worth it. if it hasnt given you any problems why replace a good car with a new one? it sounds like money is an issue. Not saying you cant afford the new car.
if i were you keep the car and MOD it, to be honest problems occurs on all model year. i got 38k miles on my car and still drives like new. so to be honest its all depends on how you drive your car. i see so many people having problems and say i dont drive this car hard but my engine blew. Fawk that not going to say anymore but we all know why it blew. im just saying from friends, family and shops that had the problem and why the problem started. Keep it id rather spend the xtra cash on MOD than having a new M3... well its the same car afterall you know. SO START MODDING YOUR CAR START WITH LCI TAILS. TRUST ME ITS BETTER THAN THE 08 HERES MY 08

I went from a new 2008 M3 coupe to a used 2010 M3 sedan. It was worth it for two main reasons: (1) wanted four doors to be different....lots of M3 coupes in Houston and hardly any M3 sedans and wanted four doors in case I need them in the future; (2) wanted LCI tail lights;(3) the new iDrive is leaps and bounds better than the 2008 iDrive. The new iDrive interface makes everything easier and its so fast. I hated how the 2008 iDrive would take almost 1 minute to boot up and not be able to enter navigation addresses or pair with my phone; and (4) wanted a car with less miles and longer warranty.

Reasons (in order): - wanted M-DCT from the very begining in 2008, could not find one in the color combo that I wanted at that time - wanted to do Individual - wanted to do ED - need rear folding/split seats - wanted a Coupe this time - wanted to have the Combox with Assist; I retrofitted the iDrive CIC in my old M3 but retrofitting the Combox right now disables Assist, and I do not want to deal with that. I do not feel that there are any quality issues between MY2008 and the MY2012 M3 -my old M3 had one issue in 32,000+ miles, the A/C-, if anything there should be even less as the platform, software and the engine have matured quite well. The LCI changes are of no importance to me, although they are nice. Money-wise my old M3 sold quite well so getting the new one is not a financial burden. So this is a no-brainer for me, I love this car and getting a custom build one in Munich and drive it in the Autobahn is a dream come true. What I would say is this... look at your pocket, do your own list of things that you like/dislike on your current M3 and then stand back, wait until the balance tilt to one side, and then decide. That's what I did. |

^ funny never had any issue on my navi, although the new Idrive looks better but it doesnt bother me. although the 4 door thing is a good choice, but i stayed with my E92 even with my 8 years old in the back seat which she hates and wish i got a 4 door like mommy. but then again she isnt driving the car. so it doesnt really matter. LOL
Having less miles, i dont know i drive the car daily and i think its meant to drive it not store in the garage. sooner or later your 2011 warranty will end like the 2008 im not planning swapping car every 4 years or just before the warranty. just doesnt make sense.

If I decide to swap my car, I will get another CPO. So let's say by Jan 2012, I will get a 2010 or 2011 CPO. But I am worried about the issues new 2011 M3s have. (just by reading threads here)

I am not a fan of turbo cars to be honest. Also I think I like the looks of e92 better than F32 (from the pictures we have seen here)

Again for people who asked, MONEY is always an issue. I am not a millionair or anything, so that's why I will get another CPO if I decide to swap her.

It is because I don't want to lose $40K in 2.5 years. Like my car was purchased originally for around $93K and I bought it CPO for $57K.
I would be okay to get another 2 years warranty and newer model, and less mileage for around $10K extra. Does it make sense? Let me know if you think I am wrong.

Here is the problem, your car (and mine incidentally) are only worth about $40-42K (CAD) on a trade right now. In 7-8 months, it will be worth even less. In addition, there is no way you will find a CPO 09-11 M3 in 7-8 months for a $10K upgrade in price. It'll be more like double that (at least)
As many have said here, you are WAY better off keeping your car, modding it and enjoying it. If when the F3X M3 comes out you still want an E9X car, then I'm sure you'll find some tasty 11's or 12's that are CPO.

My plan is to keep mine. I regret selling my other ///M and will not make that mistake again. Everytime i said let me sell it so I can get the new one when it comes out and lost money everytime. I saved enough to pay cash for 2011. I also started saving money to pay cash for the new ///M probably 2016 before I can pay it in full but if I don't I will be satisfied driving my old ///M around. If you worry about how much money it going to depreciate than you will never enjoy the car like you should. The moment you forget about it is the moment you feel great about your 08. Think about it you bought a 93K car for $57K. That a good deal. Be happy about that. Best of luck on your decision, OP.
