How many miles does the oil sensor need to display accurately?

I changed my oil yesterday and put in 8.5l of new oil. I've driven about 40-50 miles and its still indicating I need to add oil. After doing much reading here before I did my oil change (DIY's here were very helpful) it seems that max capacity is 8.8l or there about so I've been holding off adding anymore oil.

For those of you that have experienced similar issues after a change how long has it taken for the indicator to read correctly?

If it continues for another day or two I may add another .25l.

Give it a few more days to settle down. As long as you know you added 8.5, you are good. I would not add .25l at anytime because that little amount will really throw the sensor off.

So how do indy and BMW techs seem to get the oil in the middle? They just keep adding regardless of how much until the sensor reads the middle?

I don't know how much drained out but 8.5 1l bottles went in (i made sure to get all the oil out of the filter housing).

This happened to me on my last oil change i personally did too and my indie shop discovered my oil sensor was malfunctioning. I was at 65k and it was time to change it. It seemed like a low amount of mileage for it to stop working, but my new one is reading it accurately now.

I just add an amount that I know is between min and max and keep reading it over the course of a week. It'll eventually have the updated oil level and then I'll just top it off a bit.

Can't you just hold down the bc button while the dash display is on the oil level screen?

I added .25 liters and now it says 3/4 of the way to max, this system is infuriating!

In the future I think I'll continue to do as before and do 8.5l, wait a few days and add a small amount more but no more than 8.8l if it requests it.

I've been putting 9 litres and haven't had any issues. Now, that's with draining both front and rear sumps, and the filter.

+1, i put 9 Litres in everytime and sometimes, the oil level indicator still display one level below max. As long as you drain everything and also turkey baster the oil filter housing, 9L is pretty safe.

I always think that oil levels don't really have to be SUPER precise, as long as you're within tolerances you're fine. Just dont put too little or fill excessively too much. One way to know for sure is fill back exactly same amount of oil that you drained out + a tad bit more (usually spills some and soak up some with paper towels etc...).

Cheers!

I figured it would be less than 8.8l because I did not have the car level as many here suggest, just up on ramps in the front. I did take out all the oil in the filter housing. The used oil goes into a large storage container so I'm not filling up 1l bottles. I'll do the 8.5-9l until I have several more changes under my belt and know how the car is.

Having an angle socket for the 6mm hex really helped I'll say.

Draining both sumps, and taking a turkey baster to the filter housing, I add 9 liters and it puts my reading right in the middle. Just try adding .25 liters at a time until the reading is ok.
