Poor-man's HUD

I’m sure that has happened to any spirited driver on this forum. I’ll be passing a car on a one lane HWY and another is coming facing me, nothing unusual, happens to me on almost daily bases. During the pass I would sometimes hit the 8000RPM line, I usually use my ears to change gears but when I’m closing on redline I usually get a quick look at tachometer/shift lights, well I don't always have the time to do that. In a situation like above I always wish there is an audible “shift beep” that mimics the shift lights, starts slow and gets quicker (and can be disbled just like shift lights). That would be very helpful in a situation like that and would be a tremendous help on track as well. This is the poor man’s HUD but sounds very simple to implement.
Do you think anyone out there can retrofit such a thing?

I wondered the same thing even when I had the E46, an audio beep would be cool. The 350Z and 370Z's had these.

Can BMW's sport steering wheel with the tach LEDs be fitted to the M3?

If you mean the BMW performance steering, yes..many have this already.

Very good idea as an option that can be defeated during regular driving

There was an aftermarket system for the S2000... I never felt the need to purchase it though.
