BMW says that 128kps WMA is the equivalent in sound quality to 160kps MP3, however music in the iPod can be recorded lossless in the best case, 320kps VBR in the worst case, giving a much better sound quality -and burning options- that what the HDD could possibly can provide.

Just listen to a 128kps song and then to the same song at 320kps and you will know immediately what I'm talking about.
Agreed - music should be at least 192kbps or higher.

latest news on 6FL retrofit for NA market?

Does anyone have the latest info on whether or not a 6FL retrofit kit is coming to the North American market?

I had a dealer look into this for me and there is no word. I doubt it will come. Just get the glovebox one, its great. I don't know why people have an issue with it. Its perfect except fro the fact that I cant get random to work, but that may be my issue?!

The negatives I've heard include:

- very slow response time
- doesn't charge 3G iphone (might need y adaptor or does the latest version fix this?)
- can't also have cd changer
- random stops working if you jump to next track
- no additional USB port

Besides that I guess it works ok? How much did it cost you all told and did you car need to be coded for a cd changer or did you have that previously?

In response to above..
1- Its not fast, but its not slow IMO. I've seen really slow ones before. This isnt too bad.
2- I am not sure if it charges, but I doubt it. You can buy a $20 adapter that goes inline. I'm not sure if it will play from the iphone, but honestly, you are not going to want to be plugging your iphone in there all the time. Just get a used nano and you're set. Thats what I did.
3- this is probably true, but you can still have the indash cd, and who the hell uses changers anymore anyway, especially if you have mp3s.
4- I've been using mine for a few weeks, havent seen this happen yet.
5- USB is really cool, but if you have a ipod, why do you need it?!

It costs $400 and install is a hour or two I think. I think the dealer does need to code for it. I am not too sure on these points as it, and the iphone dock, were added as part of my purchase deal.

BTW, to charge your iphone, get the iphone dock addon. I have it and its great for charging and being able to see it easily. It also uses the car's antenna which actually does work - gives me at least a bar when I plug it in.

I know there are probably better options out there, especially on the new cars, or cars with 6fl, but honestly, its just a mp3 player. Its not rocket science. It works fine and I'm happy with it. You can still get song titles and select via idrive. You can sort on playlist, album, song etc. Go for it!

No confirmation at the moment, but programming is now available on our station - it's a step in the right direction when the kits are finally released.

Tom - thanks for the input. I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're saying though ... does this mean you're seeing some kind of software update already in the BMW programming system you have which might indicate that a 6FL retrofit kit is coming?

Awesome, thanks for the info Tom! I guess that's a positive sign but not a guarantee of an actual product being released any time soon ...
