The reason why M3 > Prius

Driving home on the 10 East the other day I was cruising in moderate traffic (40-50mph) when for no apparent reason traffic comes to a complete stop.

The Prius driver in front of me slams on the brakes, the tires start screeching and the car quite literally slides into the truck in front of it.

All this happens in a matter of seconds but it played out in slow motion in front of me. I hit the brakes as soon as i see the prius brake lights but something wasn't computing in my head.

This prius seems like it's trying desperately to stop so i'm thinking i better slam on my brakes but yet i know at the speed i'm going and the distance i have between me and the prius i don't have to step on the brakes that hard

So I apply moderate force on the brakes and stop well in back of the Prius...but in these situations i'm usually not afraid of hitting the guy in front of me...i'm afraid the guy in back of me won't stop in time and rear end me....i look in my rear view mirror and what car do i see? A DB9! Obviously the guy stops in time.

Lesson of the day: Prevent accidents drive sports/sporty cars.

Ironically I was in almost the exact same situation a few years ago in my 350z. Civic in front of me hits the guy in front of him, i stop in time, i look up at the rear view mirror and see a Scion tc and think CRAP....and bam he rear ends me.

M3 60 to 0 stopping distance = 100ft
Prius 60 to 0 stopping distance = 131ft

wow.

Stick some high performance tires and brakes on the Prius and see what happens.

Yeah, and apparently Prii aren't even always as fuel efficient as M3s!

Same worry I always have. And state to others.

Its not me I am worried about, especially in the snow. Its the other people around me.

Skinny tires = low rolling resistance = better fuel economy
-and-
Skinny tires = smaller contact patch = less stopping friction = longer stopping distance = less safe.

Saw a Honda CR-V apparently without working or standard ABS hit the brakes hard, lock the front wheels, and spin rear-first into the lane next to it, which was the lane I was in, one car length behind.

As cars continue to become more and more economy tools to get from point A to B people will treat them with less and less care. So you get roads full of cars with failing or non-operational safety systems, completely bald tires, and inattentive drivers.

Not that sports car drivers are any better, whenever I walk around the city I'm amazed how many nice cars with bald tires there are. Or BMWs on NANKANG or whatever the heck discount tires they sell at Pepboys.

Not really like this is a trend or anything. There have always been cars on worthless tires for decades and decades.

P.S. The M3 rotor is as big as my stock OEM wheels on my E30

It seems like seeing you in a rear view mirror makes drivers very nervous and they forget to brake on time.

... because most drivers are jerkin' the gherk instead of paying attention.

Nothing that an attentive driver should be able to avoid while driving any car.

Sarcasm noted, but for those who didn't catch it . . .

"Oh look, nothing happened . . .", and, of course, we all know it is a totally valid test, since the energy imparted by a body at 0 MPH (static loading) is the same as the energy imparted by a body at, say, 70 MPH (dynamic loading).

Sadly, since most people don't know even rudimentary physics, most people will probably be impressed with that commercial . . .

Good top gear video def seen before. BUT, to have a comeback on his general statement of, "its not what you drive its how you drive it", I can't get better than 20 mpg in the city no matter how slow i drive. Im sure in a prius i'd be hitting 30+

Seent it.... But yea, his point has some validity for sure. nitpicking

I once had 7 pri'i around me at a stop light in Santa Monica. A few years ago, I was in my 335i and was rear-ended in the carpool lane by a single driver Prius and pushed into another single driver Prius in front of me. That's when the hatred started to manifest....

The BMW dealer gave me a Camry loaner car. I hate driving it and I feel unsafe. It doesn't maneuver, accelerate, stop, or give good road feed back. People shouldn't be driving these cars fast. They are built to get good gas mileage and not to maneuver.
