I've been meaning to pick up the Costco low-profile jack for some time. I've used it at a buddy's shop many times and it's solid. Plus, you can't beat the Costco guarantee. I'm sure they'll gladly swap it out if you pick out a lemon that got thrashed in transit. I only wish Sears would take back the two Crapsmen jacks that failed in short order.

This one is great...very low plus it has a very high lift. I've been using it for a couple of years and use it all the time.

Been using the harbour freight aluminum one for many years now. Light and very portable.

I have a few but the best one I have is the Blue-Point 1.5 ton.
It's low height is 3.5" and max height is 17.5".
And it's super light compared to my other floor jacks, about half the weight.
Pretty sure it's the same as the Harbor Freight but TWICE the price...
The best thing is it only takes about 3-4 pumps to get the car raised enough to get the wheel off.
Nothing worse than having to stand there and jack for a long time

This link took be to a jack that was rated at 3,000 lbs. I would propose getting a 2 ton jack to have a little more margin of safety.

No need for a 2 ton or larger jack to lift one end or side of a 3700 lb car. Won't do any harm to have one, though, and an advantage of heavier duty jacks is that they typically have higher lifting heights.

Agreed, my 1.5 works fine for side jacking points.
I also have the 2 ton napa jack. It's only 2 3/4" closed and will raise to 19 1/2" but that effer is heavy as hell at 90 #'s compared to 26#'s.
The napa jack works great if your trying to lift up on the center jacking points because it's much longer and lower profile. The 1.5 works great for side jacking points

It is definitely heavy. I have to deadlift the thing with good form to get it in my trunk without hurting myself. I think it's over 100 pounds.

I've had my Costco jack for years and it's awesome. Fits under all of our cars save for an extremely slammed E30 cabrio. I use it a lot and has never given me any issues.

Is the 1.5 ton rating enough or is a 2 ton rating needed? Assuming jacking from the rear end (diff) or front end center jacking point.

The little aluminum HF jacks can easily be transported in the trunk. I have brought one on a few road trips along with a snow or summer wheel. The big steel jacks that weigh 75 lbs can be transported in the trunk if you remove the handle or stick it through into the passenger compartment, but they are heavy to take in and out of the trunk.

I have the Costco jack too and I love it but holy crap, it is so heavy I had to look it up and it's 104 LBS... I agree with the deadlift!

Some good info and recommendations in here.
HF, craftsman, and costco all have solid jacks. HF prices are hard to beat

Here is a small list for any guys getting into wheel removal and installing i think that are needed to do the job safely and correctly

HF floor jack
ECS jack pad adapter
HF 2 ton jack stands
HF 1/2 tq wrench (88.5 Ft lb to 100 Ft lb tq em down) 88 FtLB a lil loose side for me
Deep sockets:
The deep sockets, or even a 1-2 inch extension to the socket, will aid in creating distance from the car and the wrench.
Coated/covered deep lug sockets (helps in keeping wheels from scratching) Not essential but there cool.

Another note, i just bought this from BMW:
Comes with carrying case, gloves, scissor jack w/ wrench to raise/lower the car, break bar, Tq wrench preset to 103 FT lbs (140nm), wheel chock..
Very cool lil setup that fits in a nice small bag, and uncludes a TQ wrench which is essential and actually works great, and is repeatedly accurate.
(remember, never drop or abuse the tq wrench, never use it to loosen, keep it clean and dry) Will keep yout tq wrench in calibration for a long time to come.
