yea but those are for inserts... i actually want a running shoe for my feet. ive been using my current gym shoes for 6 years and i think its time to get me a new pair .

Just about to say the same thing. I went to a running store and had an employee watch me run in 5 different pairs before he finally recommended some Nikes. I bought them and ran for ~4 months before I had knee problems. I bought the Vibrams shortly after that and haven't had a problem since.

I know catestrophic foot crushing can happen when you wear any shoe, but I saw a dude walking down the street in these last week... and it was just f'd up. I was like... Dude, you are going to get your toes cut off!!! I think the fact that your toes are all separated makes it seem like they are more vulnerable or something.


There have been some good reviews of them, so that's gotta count for something, it's just really wierd to see a pair out in the wild.

Do not get Vibrams you freaks

There are two dudes who lift together at my gym and where these weird things.

I don't care about the benefits, you belong on the moon.

I run pretty avidly, a few half marathons here and there... I have always had a store employee look at my feet prior to buying a running shoe to see if they are a match..

Generally, they watch me walk/run and go from there. I have not heard of a "Foot analyzer" that matches you with the perfect brand/model.

+1...have someone who knows what they're doing watch your gait. Vibram 5 fingers are a little gimmicky, and do not benefit those without a perfect arch and foot structure. If your natural foot shape is perfect they will be fine, but really no advantages over a minimalist, light weight shoe. For those with undesirable structure, like myself with wider and flatter feet, some arch support is necessary, and as long as you're not buying another gimmicky shoe (air, shocks, etc) and sticking to the basics you should not expect any more or less frequent injury than "barefoot" runners.

Wear, not the same as where. Running shoes are about pure utility, who gives a sh!t about form?

You make a good point. I have an incredibly high arch and can never find a shoe that fits it well, which is why I love my vibrams. Not to mention that they've forced me to run correctly, landing on the ball of my foot instead of the heel.

This is another good point, a lot of shoes (esp the air, shocks) incentivize the runner to land on their heel, which amplifies forces on the joints, especially the knees. Landing on the ball of your foot or landing flat are much more desirable than landing heel to ball. Run properly in either vibrams or a minimalist shoe with proper support if needed and you should be ok from an injury standpoint

I'll never buy a pair of vibram's but I guarantee they don't have a pair that fit my foot. I have an insanely narrow foot, that the most narrow of shoes is still not the best fit.

FWIW, they make running shoes that help to correct the way you step/run.

If you run more than ~25 miles a week in five fingers don't be surprised if you get injured. I'm not saying it's inevitable, just be careful.

Like anything 'barefoot' running is something you have to ease into, especially if you have spent your whole life in shoes, in which case the muscles, ligaments, and tendons in your feet and calves will be weaker than they would be.

True to an extent, but if you've had decent gait running up until now the adjustment period to "barefoot" or minimalistic shoes shouldn't really a huge deal. If you're running 25mi a week then you should be able to gauge how you're doing pretty well - the transition should maybe take the effect of an extended transition into a new pair of shoes. 50-75% distance at 50-75% pace depending on your comfort level and go from there without over extending your body's resources
