M3 vs Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale

So my mate got himself a used Ferrari 360 CS. Stripped and race prepped, it comes with ceramic brakes straight from the factory. This is a lightened, factory tuned version with carbon seats, racing exhaust and a carbon engine bay. maximum power on paper is 420bhp and torrwur 373Nm.

We were taking a drive when we decided to do a friendly test. Here is the clip

Nice, now let's see one with a decent camera and an even start.

wow, didn't realize our cars could pull that easily on a 360 CS, even the weird start. Does your M3 have a bunch of mods?

Lightweight pulley, M performance exhaust, on the latest software and fresh plugs. The DCT plays a part too as I can see the M3 pulling away with every shift

Take a look at dyno's out there for the 360. The dyno of an m3 is so much more linear and guessing much more AUC even though similar peak power but the 360's usually put down 330 whp vs m3 usually puts down 340ish-350 stock. what makes the difference is the DCT speed of shifting. THe gear ratios are almost identical for each gear (different FD and gear ratios but combine to equal the same). The 360 is a lot lighter as well. Shows you a DCT is good for about 30 hp equivelent to a manual non-dct car.

Also a 360 is older and surely is not putting out its full power so probably down 20 hp over new. So essentially a 50 hp advantage for the m3 taking into account the dct factor

What makes the difference is the 7 speed short gearing on the m3 compared to the 6 speeds which obviously have one less gear and ratios less spaced. So the actual power delivered to the ground factoring in gearing, as well as the speed of the dct, makes the power advantage much more than what it appears to be from the whp figures
Good analysis. I had the chance to pax in the 360 CS and here is an edited clip of acceleration

I actually edited my post as I calculated the ratio with FD multiplied by in gear ratios and the m3 has a slight advantage in 1st but from 2nd-4th they are equal gearing. 5th and beyond the m3 has a huge advantage but those speed do not come into play.

The m3 really should have had more aggressive gearing for gears 1-4.

But the speed of the dct alone makes up for a ton of extra weight the m3 carries. Its about 250 pounds heavier

Also to be accurate the 360 I believe only has 395hp unless this model has upped horsepower too?

If I am right this version which is stripped down track prepped is the one with the higher hp. Challenge Stradale . No sound proofing, totally Bare interior. Carbon fibre doors.

Easy to pull on a 360. That was a late 1990's-early 2000's car. Times change and so does power.. Now put the current M3 against the 458 Italia or F430 and you will have a different story.

Good runs!

i don't care how dated the 360 is, the 360CS is pure sex. When you can drop coin to get that car, it's not about speed anymore, it's 100% about that fun to drive factor. Who cares about 420 hp, or crappy F1 transmission, and I'm sure it'll scrap even without fat chicks, but that exhaust and style is pure sex..I would drive that shit like I stole it, everyday.

If anybody in the midwest has a 360 and they're ashamed of this result, PM me to talk details of a swap...

Age has nothing to do with it. HP is HP providing the gearing is not archaic 4 speed auto or something. This things apparently weighs 2800 pounds with 420 hp. Surprised it actually is not closer

But, the driving experience in the 360CS would be hard to duplicate. The noise alone is worth the price of admission. The 360CS will become a classic.

Pictures and videos alone will make one choose the 360 CS over the E92 M3.

But reality is such that the '04 360 CS cost 50% more than an '09 M3. Thats over 100k difference over here.

Will you cough up the dough to get the CS in this case?

As far as I remember a 360 CS is about 600-700 pounds lighter than our cars. It curbs at 2850 pounds.. So I'm surpriced at how easy this M3 pulled on it.

You can get a huge advantage by hitting the gas a few tenths before your opponent. This video shows a "regular" 360 vs a modded e92.

Yea, that's where I was going. It is an old car, but the power to weight- I was like wtf batman, should it not be at best an even race? anyhow, I think that car is beyond lust for power/speed, it's the whole package of driving a Ferrari that conquers all. I also think the 360 has aged better than the F430 for some reason (looks wise).
