Here is a good article about Dubai's new tower. I pretty much share the same opinion as the author.
Burj Dubai: The new pinnacle of vanity For all the ambition of its construction, Dubai's new Khalifa Tower is a frightening, purposeless monument to the subprime era "...I have a vision of it now, several years hence, its glossy surfaces dulled by sandstorms, embarrassing stress-fractures in its shiny, arrogant face. It will be an ancient monument surprisingly soon. Vanity, vanity, all is vanity." |

when i was there in 2008, their average sized buildings were absolutely gigantic up close. this building wasnt topped off yet and we drove as close as we can to it. it was unreal. not something you can experience in the u.s. esp like nyc where its extremely packed

Its not called the Burj Dubai any more, its called the Burj khalifa. They renamed it after the ruler of Abu Dhabi, whom bailed Dubai out of their debt.

I was there a few months ago and it does look WAY TALLER in person. It can be seen from 60 miles away. I went into Dubai Mall which is right beside it and its breathtaking to be that close..

Take the Eiffel Tower and place the Empire State Building on top of it and you would still be looking down on it from the top of the Burj.
I used to be in construction design/management and worked on some large projects in the Middle East (Oman). I would love to see this up close.

Problem is when you are already in a financial crisis because you failed to make a ski resort in the desert, and then you go and keep building more tall shit, thats showing off, stupidly. Take that money and use it to stabilize your economy thats already going down the shitter, not build the tallest shit. Im not hating on them for having it, im hating on them for squandering the money that the country needs in other sectors.

...wrong oil only makes up 6% of dubai's revenue. Dubai became rich because it established itself as a financial hub for banking and finance such as New York, Hong Kong, and London.
