BMW stolen after owner's driveway blocked
article by Stephanie Gardiner on smh.com.au
June 26, 2012 - 8:06AM

Car thieves have blocked a driveway with bollards to lure a man out of his BMW, before taking his keys and driving away in the luxury car in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Police said the 26-year-old driver was trying to park his BMW M3 in an underground car park on Petrarch Avenue, Vaucluse, about 9.15pm yesterday but the entrance was blocked by the poles.

The man got out of his car to move them when he was approached by two large men who had their faces covered, police said.

One of the men got into the car, while the other demanded the car keys.

The pair drove off and were last seen travelling west on New South Head Road.

Rose Bay local area command duty officer, Inspector Jason Knox, said police believed the thieves put the bollards on the driveway.

He was not able to say whether the BMW, with NSW registration JY1812, had any kind of GPS tracking device installed.

The 26-year-old man was not injured in the carjacking.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Must have been a scary experience. I live in the Redfern/Waterloo area of South Sydney and always keep an eye out for dodgy characters hanging around the entrance to my garage. Don't really expect this kind of thing in Vaucluse though.

I remember when the V10 M5 first came out and there was a car jacking in Bondi. The thieves didn't know how to start it and forced the owner to show them!

What I have heard people do in the past in this situation is throw the keys away like on a roof or down a drain.

Not good though.

Would it be worth having a dud key sitting in the car and keep the real one in your pocket? When they drive off I assume the car will stop at some point without the real key. Probably a good idea to run like hell as they attempt to drive off. Just a thought.

Bought one day, gone the next: luxury cars stolen from garage
Story by Stephanie Gardiner
July 3, 2012

Thieves with a taste for black, expensive fast cars continue to target Sydney's eastern suburbs, with two luxury cars worth $500,000 stolen a day after their owner brought them home.

Police said two men broke into the garage of a unit on New South Head Road, Rose Bay, about 2.40am on Saturday - less than a week after a resident in nearby Vaucluse was carjacked in his black BMW as he drove into his underground car park.

The timing of the weekend hit was extraordinary. The owner of the cars, a 2012 black Porsche Panamera Turbo S and a 2012 black Mercedes C350, had brought them home the day before.

The Porsche is one of only two of its colour and model in Australia, and sells from $440,200. The Mercedes is worth about $94,400.

The Rose Bay Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Peter Daley said it was unclear how the thieves gained access to the garage, but the keys to both cars were nearby.

''The keys were actually with the vehicles or close by the vehicles,'' he said.

The thieves were in the garage for nearly an hour. Police said they were seen driving west along New South Head Road about 3.30am.

Police are now examining a range of theories, including whether the thieves had been aware of the owner's purchase beforehand.

Inspector Daley said there was no evidence to suggest the theft was some kind of set-up.

A NSW Police spokesman was unable to shed any light on how the men got into the garage.

''It's not clear … There's no signs of forced entry,'' the spokesman said.

The Porsche has NSW registration plates CYC777, while the Mercedes has NSW registration plates WVW777.

Police have not found the black BMW stolen in Petrarch Avenue, Vaucluse, on June 25 as its 26-year-old driver tried to enter an underground car park.

Thieves blocked the entrance to the car park with bollards to lure the man out of the car, before they demanded his keys and drove away. The BMW has NSW registration plates JY1812.

Inspector Daley said there was no evidence that the two thefts were linked.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000

The car will continue to drive without a key until it either runs out of fuel or the engine is turned off manually I believe. It then should not start without the key.

On this topic, can anyone recommend a good tracking service in Australia?
