Honestly, the 1M could have been complete garbage and they would be collectible and expensive later anyway, just because it is rare. Look at the Z1 for example. It's really not a good car, but they aren't cheap to buy. Same with a 850CSi. I looked at a Z3M coupe but wasn't willing to pay double what I paid for the E36 haha.

I'm pretty sure the value will go down but I still bought mine a week before the new M's started landing. I think after a while the price kind of levels out and kind of stays there (like the e46 M's). I would have lost more if I bought the new M3/4 than buying a CPO e9x M3 with low miles though.

I personally see the prices coming down fairly soon, and probably even more so in about a year. Mainly for one reason: the new M is A LOT faster. Not to mention much better mpg. I know that neither of those are everything, but speed is huge to someone in this segment, and it's not like gas prices are going down these days. I'm personally an NA guy myself, but it is what it is.. Gotta get with the times. Looks wise, I think the e9x and new models are about equal.

Actually I'm surprised that the value of low mileage 13's haven't fallen that much. I bought my car a year ago and the price difference is only a few thousand.
Otherwise the car seems to be following the usual depreciation trend. |

True. I picked up a loaded '13 with only 16000 miles, and half a year of OEM warranty / maintenance for $42,998 before taxes and fees. That was this month. There's definitely a premium.

In Europe E90 M3 seems to hold and even go up i price, and the model practically just went out of production.
I have the means to buy almost any BMW if i would like, but the last generation just can get my juice flowing and i am wondering, Will this be my last M? |

The e30 is the most expensive M3 of them all and by far the slowest. The Toyota Supra mark IV, speed wise, is nothing special today. If you look at an e92 M3 within a 25 year span, it becomes somewhat of an enigma. The only M3 with a V-8. The only BMW with an engine it does not share with any other car. The last you can buy without a navigation system or turbocharger. Speed might matter to you, but to a collector in 10 years? Doubtful.

We are three years into the new generation now and E92 M3 values have held strong. Low-mile examples that are well cared-for and properly optioned are harder and harder to find.

As it looks so far my current car will be the best car deal I ever done also from a depreciation stand point. Should they all of a sudden start to drop like a stone I'm back to the budget I originally planned for do all good. |

I think the value of the E9x will continue to fall for about 4 or 5 more years, at a rate of about $2k-$4k/year, and then will level off in the mid-high teens for the first years of production.
FWIW, here is what I see: You can already get a high mileage, abused 2008 for low - mid 20's. This is the bottom of the barrel right now, but it's not really a good indication of current value, as they are the very first, and most driven examples out there. This of course hurts the value of the newer MY's with lower miles because potential buyers (i.e. tire kickers) see that they can get a 2008 for the low 20's and assume that the 2012 with 30k miles should only be $30k. Thats just not the case. I expect these earlier model year, higher mileage examples to be in the mid teens within the next 3 or 4 years as the value of the newer M3/4 dropping keeps pushing the overall value of the generation even lower. 2010-2011's w/ 50-60k miles are currently sitting nicely around the mid 30's. Higher mileage examples of these two years can be had for the low 30's, with the highest mileage (maybe 100k+) in the high 20's, and low mileage (<30K) in the high 30's, and extremely low mileage (<15k) in the low 40's. 2012-2013 with normal mileage for the year (20k-40k) are sitting in the low-mid $40ks. Of course you will occasionally see a very nice deal (there is a 2013 w/ 42k miles for $37k OBO on Ebay ATM), but again, that hurts the overall value of the car, because any potential buyer looks at that price and says "why would I buy a 2011 for $35k when I can get a MY 2013 for a couple grand more?" Well within their right to think so, but the fact remains, a seller is going to price this car at whatever price he or she feels comfortable selling it at depending on factors like condition, MY, location, mods or lack of, maintenance records, options, mileage, urgency to sell (in a hurry or patient), and a buyer is going to buy the car at whatever price they feel is fair after considering their other options and how badly they want that particular car. To a certain extent, it's currently a highly varying market, but one thing is for sure, the value of these aren't going to skyrocket. Yes, it's the last V8, but it's still just a car and they just aren't special enough to go up in value. Not yet anyway. In 5 years, I expect my 2011 to be worth low - mid 20's, and the high mileage 2008's to be $12k-$15k. This will be the bottom of the barrel, and at that point, when nostalgia sets in and the desirability and lack of low mileage, clean examples of the car comes into play, you might start to see the newest MY's w/ extremely low mileage (10k) fetch upwards of $40k. In 15 years when the norm for a 2013 (at which point will be 18 years old) is over 100k miles and costs $18k, you might find a 1 owner 2013 that was garaged and only driven 500 miles a year listed for $50k or more, but that is still just speculation and not worth much as it will be a unicorn and only a true enthusiast with more money than common sense will buy it. Only time will tell.
