Cold Start Revving

I made a thread similar to this, and just want to get more info on it. Many people do it especially at meets or car events like SEMA.

Cold start revving in neutral. People do it all the time, some even tape it. How bad is this for he car if at all? Does it make a difference if there is no load (neutral) or load (driving)?

As for revving while the engine is cold...yes that's bad don't do it.

But when you think about it...free-revving is the same as rev-match downshifting....
Although I personally don't do it standing still and think it's stupid...I don't think it's bad for a warm engine.

It causes unnecessary wear on the engine to rev it when it's cold. Doesn't matter whether it's a free rev or not, it's not good. That said, once in a while isn't going to leave you needing a new motor any time soon. Just don't make a habit out of it.

Best answer. If you don't need to do it, don't. Let the engine properly warm up and then open her up all you want.

Bingo....as soon as you start her, drive her, but carefully with no hard accelerations or high rpms. Drive her easy and slowly begin to go harder and harder.

Never let idle to want up, very bad, so even says BMW. Idle does not produce ideal oil pressure, you need some load based accelerations (i.e. not neutral revving).

Hopes that helps.

Cheers,

Is best to let her at least get through the cold start sequence first.
