What's the best all around summer 'budget' 19" tire?
I like the oem tires, but am looking for a less expensive option.
I am not too hard on the car, it's a DD not a track car never been to the track never will. I am looking for all around performance dry and wet are important, probably more interested in a tire that does great in the rain or at least a tire that does very good in the wet. treadwaer and dry performance is also important. I still want them to be max performance summer tires, just not to cost $350 each. Would be interested in the best (or what people prefer) in a tire for $999 a set or less. I am getting a new wheel so the size will be +20mm more than stock 19" (I currently have the stock 18" combo). I saw a test where the Hankook V12 did very well for the money and I was thinking the Conti Extreme Contact DW sounds like it may be a good choice. any suggestions? Thanks. |

Watch the for sale forum. I'm in the process of selling a near new set of PS2s for $750 shipped. Similar deals are out there. Why compromise the tires on your M3? Lot's of people will tell you their brand is "just as good as OE", but the fact is, they aren't.

I don't want to buy used tires. I mean, yes it would save some money but who is going to stand behind the used tires if there is an issue? Do I want the hastle of second hand tires or dealing with an unknown person on the internet? Last edited by rai; 03-03-2011 at 08:51 AM.. |

Look Through the First 4 or 5 Pages of the Forum
"Best" is a matter of opinion. Each tire is a compromise based on what its manufacturer thought would meet a specific market and the manufacturer's ability to meet its targets. Some ride better, some are quieter, some have stiff side walls and are more responsive, some grip better, some work better in the rain, some have more lateral grip, etc. If you look through the first several pages of this forum, you can find lots of opinion and information about what is out there and what's a good value. It should be pretty easy to find 3 or 4 tires that will meet your needs just fine.
Vredestein Sessanta's and Hancook V12's are popular now, but there are others.

I bought the Vredestein Sessanta's, they are really a really good ride. They are a little stiffer than the PS2's, but also about half the price.
The difference is not as noticeable as I thought it would be, I have been very pleased with the Vredestein so far. |

I don't get why people buy cheap tires for their expensive, high-performance sports car. It's like buying a $5,000 TV and $1,000 Blu-Ray player and using the cheapest cable you can find to connect the two. If you are going to buy crappy tires, buy a crappy car. I get that some of the less expensive tires can be decent, but they aren't as good as a PS2 or RE11.

I owned the Hankook V12s and they were as just as good as the PS2s overall in my opinion... better in some ways, worse in others (which was also confirmed by Car and Driver in their review). They had similar overall grip but were more comfortable and quieter. The PS2s though had better turn in and felt a little crisper. So... no tire snobbery needed... paying more is not always getting more. Sometimes that is true, but it isn't a rule and if someone can save 30% to get a tire that is just as capable on the street and 95% as capable on the track and still in the same performance category, why wouldn't they?

For tires it all comes down to bang for the buck. I run Vreds personally. Sure once a month or so on the street I can appreciate a PS2 ever so slightly more than a Vred, it just is not worth double the money.
