Thinking of Getting a e92 M3 coming from 335i
Hey what's up everyone, I'm looking at getting a used e92 m3 '09 or newer. Right now I have a 335i but won't have it much longer. I've also been checking out the c63 amg, the e60 m5's, cayman s, and audi s5's. I've ruled out the s5 since i'd really be wanting the rs5 which is too expensive and not out here yet. I haven't driven the c63 yet, but probably will this week. The e60 m5 is cool but the new f10 5 series is out now plus it's probably gonna be a little more than I want to spend. Also gonna check out the cayman s this week. My concern about the e92 M3's is that I know the new 3 series is right around the corner, although the m3 version will probably be 2 years or so out. Also will I get tired of it faster since I already had the 335i? I test drove the M3 and definitely loved it. Any advice or ideas? Thanks!

the new M3 won't be out for at least 3 years. the c63 only comes in an automatic. i prefer the e60 to the new 5-series. as long as you don't mind the size of the car and the REALLY bad mileage, i'd do one of those coming off-lease.

Yeah, the milage of the E60 M5 is one of the things that is off putting to me also. Just from a time standing at a pump and total range perspective. The fact it is worse than the C63 is testament to how thirsty that V10 in that large suit is.

If you dont need rear seat, Caymen S is a really fun car.

those are all great cars and they all have there pros and cons. If dont have to get a car right away i would save up and get the F10 M5. Its going to be one of the sickest cars BMW has made in a while i think, if not you cant go wrong with the M3. Especially since there will no longer be a v8 motor available in the future "as of now". but your doing the right thing, go test drive them all.

Thanks for all the input! Yeah I do need to grab a car soon or I won't have a car haha. I am leaning towards the M3. The M5 is nice but I think I like having a smaller car especially since my girl is gonna have an SUV so if we need to have more people in it, we can take that.

I can attest to the really bad mileage of the m5. I avg about 12 mpg combined city/hwy driving and that's not getting on the gas lol. But when you buy a car like this I guess you can't complain about the mileage. The 500hp v10 makes me forget about that pretty quickly.

All I can say is the F10 is fuggin HUGE. I thought my Challenger was a beast size wise, the F10 is bigger.
What do you need the car for? C63 has 4 doors, Cayman has 2, E60 has 4 doors, E92 M3 has 2. Damn... decide if you need 2 doors or 4, and cut your list of options in half...lol

I went from my former E90 335i to my current E92 M3. OMG, I never think about the 335 anymore. It's a great car, but shit, it's not an M3 I'm telling you that. I'm over the turbos. My goal was to ultimately have a natural V8 and I am damn sure I was able to obtain this car. I will never get rid of it unless my financial situation forces it. I plan on keeping this collector for a long time. I'm in the process of getting myself a second beater to drive back and forth to work to keep the mileage off the M, but for now, it's my DD and I could not be happier in any way. I am totally stuck on BMW. Prior to the 335, I came from an '08 Acura TL-S. Wow, what a jump I have made since getting rid of that Acura. What a rattle-box that was.
If you go with the M3, you will never regret it. |

Here here. I drove one awhile back. Felt like I'd been driving it forever in terms of how "at home" I felt. The balance, gearbox, and clutch were all top notch. If you don't need a backseat it's a contender. You can find a nicely optioned used one under 20K miles in the low 40s. Not a bad deal.
All depends what you're looking for--if you want more room, and need an all rounder, you'd be hard pressed to find a better option than the M3. |

If i was in your position knowing that the new m3 model is gonna come out in 2-3 years i would not get it. Out of all your choices i'll probably get the c63. call me crazy.

i just went from a E92 335i to a E92 M3 and i love it.
my decision-making process was a little different than yours. i liked a lot about the E92 in general, but owned the 335i and was unhappy with the maintenance (coming out of warranty), engine reliability, etc. i especially liked the form factor and overall style of the vehicle, as i didn't want something that was only good for sunday driving, but also didn't need 4 doors or a ton of extra capacity. i've also always wanted to try a proper ///M car, which was another plus. additionally, you can make a 335i fast, but the x-factor of the M3 was appealing along with the idea of it being good-to-go out of the box (getting a bit sick of modding). not that i've done it, i couldn't be happier with my decision. despite the fact that they look similar, the M3 is a totally different animal and has really re-engaged my love of cars (for some reason the 335i decreased it despite checking all the boxes i thought i had for a vehicle). the M3 takes everything that is great about the E92 and absolutely maximizes it, and for me that was exactly what I was looking for in a car. interestingly, my friends and others notice the difference as well, and some have even thought it is a different model (like a series). even my (non-car fanatic) girlfriend recognizes it's a totally different car, which is a real testament to what goes into a ///M haha. my two cents. good luck Last edited by booch; 07-12-2010 at 10:07 PM.. |

I also came off 335i sport pack 6MT....
With current unbelievable lease rates on M3, you should consider leasing instead of buying. These lease Reisduals and Money Factor make it much cheaper to lease brand new 2011...than buying CPO-used-pre owned.... at the end it always comes down to "Value vs Owed" and buying used will most likely put you underwater in a few years,- owing more than the car is worth... Only in America we have such great lease rates/deals etc,... we take it for granted really... With lease, you can always buy out lease after I was shopping for pre-owned myself, but decided to lease instead and very happy with my decision,- this way I built my perfect M3 with everything I want and don't want in it! Perfect time to get M3- Competition Package!

Leasing has it's pitfalls as well. http://www.caranddriver.com/news/car...ogram-car_news http://www.edmunds.com/advice/leasin...2/article.html http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=305802 "One advantage of leasing was that you could "drive more car for the money." A $500 monthly lease payment might put you in a BMW, whereas a $500 loan payment would buy a Honda Accord. In other words, you couldn't afford to buy the BMW — but you could lease it. This led to the criticism that leasing allowed people to drive cars they couldn't afford." Don't get me wrong there are good reasons to lease. Those who buy new cars every few years or for write offs or business use etc. But I keep my cars for a while so. I'm in the camp of cash is king and "Interest fees are (financing )for suckers" Edit: Heck why give some greedy bank cash? Hell it's no secret that a large chunk of the recession was due to people who financed things beyond their means. Last edited by PoorMan; 07-14-2010 at 09:30 AM.. Thanks for the idea of leasing. I honestly have never even considered leasing. My credit is less than ideal, is leasing something that is better if you have better credit? I can see hanging on to an M3 for a while so I wouldn't mind that part although with the leasing I know you can't do very much mods etc.
