Completely shredded OEM Michelin @ 7600 miles. Now What?
Here are some pictures of an OEM Michelin PS2 with 7600 miles, after it's fourth day at the track. On this same day, the brake sensors started telling me the pads are low. Here's the dilemna... I have to take the car in for replacement pads, but when the dealer's service team sees this tire, I'm guessing they'll say no to the brakes, although I have to give my salesman a call first to see what he thinks, because he might be able to smooth-talk the service team for me since he races for the dealership.
Q1: Has anybody received replacement pads that didn't perform as well as the ones that came on the car? Q2: Does anybody have a worn front OEM PS2 they can give me to slap on for the dealer visit? Q3: Should I remove the hard-wired transponder inside the front passenger-side wheel well? Q4: Will the dealer dial-in more negative camber if I ask None this would be an issue if I received the track wheels I bought from **********s back in early August.

Funny, those tires look exactly like mine after my last autox. My last run of the day should have been the fastest (previous runs were all getting quicker) and the car almost came to a stop in two very tight/slow turns. Once on the street I feel a bad vibration, pulled over to take a look and saw cords and chunks just like you tires.
My guess is just replace the tires and take her in for brakes and don't mention it. |

Dude, that doesn't even look safe to drive on. Get the tires replaced and avoid the question altogether.

Holly Macquerel!!
My PS2s have 16k+ on them, including a track day (given that I am a rookie and do not drive too hard) and i intend to "finish" them during an upcoming one day HDPE... hope they will not disintegrate like yours!! When will you switch to R-compound????

You sure did shred those tires. I wouldn't drive into the dealer with those. I could have sold you a set of cup tires with 2/32-3/32 thread if you had the 19" wheels for a small sum. Check the tire FS forum. I see 18" PS2s there often.

Whever the Forgestar wheels get here. I've had a set of Toyo R888s stacked up in my garage for two months now awaiting them! I'm thinking about cancelling my order and demanding my money back.

Let us know what you think about the Toyos when you finally get a chance to drive on them. It seems like nobody has anything to good to say about them unfortunately--at least not on this car.

This is typical for PS2s that are driven hard on a stock car and in general is what happens when you don't have enough negative camber and are running a tire with a soft sidewall. If you plan on doing more track events I'd get camber plates and switch to a tire with stiffer sidewalls like the RE-11s or R-comp tires.
Going to just r-comp tires won't help. You need more negative camber or you will continue to destroy tires.

I doubt your dealer going to change your pads free of charge ... Not too many cars come to change pads at 7600 miles ... plus if they see shredded rubber underneath they gonna put 2+2 together very fast ...

Put some duct tape around the tire to hold the tread on...dealer will never notice it.
Or have the tire removed and put on backwards so the separation is on the inside. he he Last edited by JIO; 10-12-2009 at 01:58 AM.. Reason: added to post |

You need some negative camber if you're wearing the outside that much.
With my E46 I had almost -3 F/R and the wear was pretty even, it showed cord all across the tread and I still drove home all the way from Buttonwillow back to LA + another week of local commuting on corded tires, so I think you'll be fine for another 50-100 miles. Just be sure to swap them out soon! |

This is what happens when you're sandwiched between two Porsche Cup cars during an open lapping day inthe instructor group... trying to catch the one ahead while keeping the one behind at bay
I know I need more negative camber, that's why I asked if the dealer will do it if asked. I won't have an issue getting the brakes replaced under the maintenance-free progream. Fortunately, I chose a dealer who understands the performance-minded customer, and won't question the early brake wear. My immediate concern is replacing the tire. The other three tires on the car are not corded, so I could really use a used one for the left front just to get the brakes taken care of. But even my dealer has their limits. If they see the tire, they will be hard to convince it was just a fluke Anyway, the R888s can't be worse than the Michelins in terms of grip. I plan to get the alignment issue taken care of before using them on the track.
