Tire Guidance: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 AS vs Continental DWS06+
Hey everyone!
I just purchased my E92 M3 and the stock competition wheels need new tires. I live in Vermont, so I’m thinking of going with one of these two high performance all-seasons in 255/35/19, 275/35/19. Does anyone have experience with either of these tires? Personal review? Thanks!

Can not speak to the latest Michelin's, but I have used prior versions and found them quite Meh, certainly for the price. The latest DWS, the DWS06 Plus I think, are about the best AS tires I have ever used, even better than a number of full on Ultra Summer tires I have had. I drive my cars rather hard and they just plain stick in the dry to about 8-10ths or so, and when they do give way I find them quite predictable. In the wet they are as good or better than anything I have used, definitely better than the last set of Michelin AS I used. Wear is reasonable as well and the performance remains very consistent as the tire gets down toward the wear marks. All in all my favorite tire across all my cars, even beating the PS4S for practicality sake if not in pure performance.

Agree with tbuck. I find the DWS 06plus to be much more confidence inspiring in all conditions over the AS3, I haven’t driven the PS4 yet. I still find my PS4S to be top dog everywhere above 40F and the Contis amazing over cold mountain passes and would have no problem running them year round if I didn’t also have the PS4S. If your M3 only sees light duty over winter the Contis are a tremendous bargain.

Have owned both. The Conti’s have better wet stop rating, drive wonderfully and are reasonably good with road noise. Both tires are reasonably decent on light or packed snow or ice without much elevation change. I’m a Conti dws+ fan for sure now and just picked up another set for a Mercedes I own for my father in law. Both tires were available and similarly priced, it wasn’t even a decision.

I'm currently running 18x9.5 square with 275/35/18 ECS's, but the speedo is off a bit. It's time for new tires and I'm looking at the DWS06+ in 275/35/18 front and 275/40/18 rear, to get the diameters closer to OEM. Problem is that the 275/40/18 is on backorder everywhere. Anyone have info on that situation, i.e. on a slow boat vs. being discontinued? 285/35/18 would be close in diameter, but a bit pinched on a 9.5" rim.

The Michelins will feel more like a summer tire. And ride more like a summer tire. They're both pretty similar in terms of tested snow/wet performance. (I suspect that the DWS is better longer - Michelins tend to age faster.)
It comes down to what you want in the tire: If you want a tire the basically feels like a mid-tier performance summer, the Michelin will do that. The DWS feels a lot more like an all season due to much softer sidewalls. I currently have two sets of the Michelin AS3+ and one of the DWS06+. The Michelins are on the E90 M3 and the E36 M3. The X5 has DWS06+.

I read something about a 5th generation but forget whether it was PS or PSS or Cup. I had a couple of sets of PSS and thought they were good all around summer tires, but now have PS4 and they are really good all around summers. Hard to imagine anything better so I am not really shopping now plus it will be another year before I need more summers. I drive in rain and some cooler weather before the snows or all seasons go on so I can’t compromise too far on a towards just warm dry handling.
