Dry January

Anyone giving it a shot this year? I'm going to try, but no promises.

My birthday's in January. Gotta celebrate.

I don't drink that much anyway, like once a week.

How about you?

My birthday is also in January. That's always been my excuse before. I'll drink a few nights a week. Mostly on the weekend (Fri, Sat, Sun). But I've also gone months without a drink in the recent past. Might be time to start another run like that.

Never done any of these sober things. Now I don't drink that much outside of social gatherings so this time of the year is the worst. Typically I don't drink much at home. Mainly just a beer or two when we got out. Especially since we do enjoy going to breweries.

That being said I have cut back on my cigar and pipe smoking. I have probably smoked a cigar once since like Oct and that was at a work event where they brought in a cigar roller so I just had to.

Pretty easy for me. I think I'm going on my 18th year sober. Haven't really needed to keep track.

I have a surgery Feb 22nd and I’m not allowed to drink 2 weeks before and after. I started to reduce already.

I keep saying I want to do a month off but I always have some reason:
Sept-Birthday and Anniv
Oct-Halloween
Nov-Thanksgiving
Dec-Christmas & NYE
Jan-Going to Orlando for wifes work conference

Ughhhh....when I stopped for my surgery I lost 14 pounds and I would love to drop 30 but I keep finding excuses

Long term... none of these one month dry type months have proven to show any health benefits at all... you either drink and eat unhealthy or you don't... really more about moderation.

I never thought I'd live to see the day where I wasn't at least 1% tempted to order a beer or wine while at a restaurant, but at 42 yrs old I am now that way. Craft cocktails have come a long way since I used to go out partying (before marriage) and so these days, if it's a special occasion, my wife and I might order one. The awesome part is, I am partying after 1 drink .

Fully support those who want to drink less, or quit. Take it a week at a time - try to replace that nagging urge with something else rewarding. If I can do it, anyone can, I've got plenty of reasons to drink, believe me .

From the Washington Post

The benefits of ‘Dry January’ last longer than a month, studies show

Quote:
People who abstained from alcohol for a month started drinking less the rest of the year and showed striking improvements in their health.

I've found some really good NA beer made by Athletic Brewing Company. They only make NA beer and it shows. So I can still swill an IPA or two and not be getting the alcohol or the calories.

The point was that it could change your drinking habits for the better. Or not. December was a bit heavy on the Jameson for me, so a break will be good.

It can't hurt. Your health will thank you. If you feel motivated to do it, by all means do it. Maybe there will be some kind of butterfly effect and it will change the way you drink, you never know.

You're writing about it here so to me that means it's on your mind. Maybe you feel like you drink too much or maybe you feel like you're getting older and you should cut back. I know a lot of people have been drinking more since the pandemic started. At the very least your body (and mind) get to detox for a month.

Over the long term my habits haven't changed. I don't get drunk by any means. At most a couple beers or a couple Jameson (or P12) and seltzer. My latest checkup (a couple of weeks ago) showed everything is within normal ranges. I just need to make sure it stays that way. And I only started this thread because I was too lazy to go find the one from last year.

I have 3 or 4 glasses of wine on Friday night. I hope that's not too much. I don't think it is. I'm always concerned about my health. I don't constantly worry about it, but I am getting older and I like to drink and don't want it to hurt me but at the same time I don't want to stop.

I grew up in the 70s where everybody I knew did drugs and alcohol, so I've done a lot more in my lifetime. A few glasses of wine once a week seems tame. Haven't really talked to my doctor about it. Maybe I'm afraid she'd say to knock it off.

The physicians rule these days is TWO 4 oz. glasses of wine per day. They can be quite specific, noting that they know all about the "House Pour"!

So that would be a negative on the house pour?

Going to have to re-think this.

PS - that's the idea. Looks like a little in the 'big' glass.
