Starting off in D mode...can't figure it out.

This is a DCT car obviously.

When I start her up and put her in Drive, it goes into manual mode.

I read the manual, and maybe I am missing something, but is there a way to set it to default in D mode???

I have taken off a couple times now in manual mode, thinking I was in D, and have reved it much higher than I would like (radio on, not hearing the rpms, etc.). It is pissing me off that I keep forgetting to make sure it is in D mode.

Any help appreciated for this poor DCT newb. TIA

It's a glaring error on BMW's part to not have it default into D (or at least your last mode). Interestingly enough, it remembers your last D mode after switching out of manual.

Stupid if you ask me.

Yeah, I noticed it remembers your last mode...I read that too.

So I guess there is not a way to default it to D....right?

Just noticed this:

the car starts in D2 all the day, but if i switch into manual mode, it remembered my last manual setting (S5 for example)... why cant it remember the last setting when i turned the car off?

Glaring error. Transmission things should controlled better by iDrive and should include key dependent settings for the complete mode, D or S and Drivelogic number. As well there should be settings for remember last used mode or always default to mode X.

Well all that might have been just a bit too much for the lofty M engineers, it should at least default to D.

Are you sure about this? Mine starts up in D2 everytime - thumb starter, reads N, one click to right - D2. Are you saying that you go into S(?) directly from N at start?

I wish you could specify the default setting to, as I don't want D2.. I find a get a clunk into first and a throttle blip when stopping that is either solved by D1 (stays in 2nd) or D3 (moves into 1st a little earlier)

Haven't figured out a way to start in D mode. I mostly drive in S anyways so it isn't a problem but it would be nice to set the defaults. Hopefully a software upgrade will address this at some point.

Mine goes to Manual mode everytime....I don't care about D2, I just want any D mode. D1, D5, whatever...just want to avoid me driving away in Sx mode and hitting the fricken rev limiter because I think I am in D! Even though the load is LOW when this has happened, it aint cool. Last time I freaked out when I finally figured it out, grabbed the wiper button, and sprayed my windshield! So I am revving the piss out of my motor and my wipers are going full bore! haha. If I saw somethng like that driving by, I would be LMAO!

I think this has been covered before that the US models start out in manual mode.

Interesting. Our two European posters indicate that theie cars start in D2...all US posters indicate that the car goes into manual mode. Hmmm.

I will inquire with my CA and see if I can get this coded at my 1,200 mile.

I can just see it now..........................

Wifey needs to borrow the car for some emergency reason.....

She gets back and says "I took the freeway the entire way....why won't you car go faster than 40 mph?" AHHH! Because you drove in first the whole time at 8,400 rpm!

I HAVE to see if I can get that changed!

As Hammer stated, all European Ms will start out in D2 after pushing the lever to the right. And all US models will start out in manual mode. No one knows why this was done. I'll be asking my SA if anything can be done about this when I take in my car for service on Monday.

Another UK DCT owner here, and my car starts in D2 like ihyln states above. To be honest, this seems OK to me, although in an ideal world you should be able to set whatever you want in the I drive. After all, you can specify what suspension setting you want as a default setting, along with whether you want the Power button engaged and the like.

Maybe a software upgrade from BMW in the future could resolve this?

Actually, I like the fact that it starts out in manual mode. I just wished it was S4 and not S3 that's all. Even though DCT has a much more useful D mode than SMG, I still prefer to drive in S mode.

I do agree that iDrive should at least give the user the option as to which mode the car should default to upon each start up.

Since you are in Europe, I wonder if S3 is the default mode for the US cars.

I do agree that this setting should be customizable via idrive. Hopefully this will be addressed in the 09

S3 is the default mode. I really really hope that I can get an answer from my SA on Monday regarding this.

Sounds like a simple software upgrade would fix it, in 08's and 09's.
