Oil pan replacement?
Took my M3 into my indy shop to get an oil change- they call me to tell me the thread is stripped. Options are try to repair it with Time-sert or replace the whole oil pan. They attempted to repair it with Time-sert and I drive it home, shove some cardboard underneath the car to check for leaks. Womp womp, a few hours later it looks like it's leaking. They quoted me about $2k to do an oil pan replacement, which seems a bit high. $1k for the pan + $1k for labor.
I'm tempted to top off the oil and take it to another indy shop to get a second opinion. I'm also curious if the shop just did a shoddy job with the Time-sert to get me to do the replacement... Anyone have any experience in this? Thank you BMW for making a relatively simple component so fragile! |

I'd have challenged them since they did the work and destroyed the thread. How else would the thread become damaged if they didn't cut corners or half assed the job.

Idk what a timesert is, but I know what a Helicoil was.
My first oil change, I had to do it because the thread was stripped and would just spin and spin. Scared the hell out of me until my father in law told me about Helicoil. He drilled a new thread. We screwed the Helicoil in. For $20ish I saved $1000. |

Sorry OP, I feel you. I was in your shoes a couple weeks ago. I could have attempted to time-sert the problem myself, but I saw the risk if I failed and decided to bring to a shop. FWIW, the shop I brought told me that out of the ~50 or so hes done, he was only not able to fix 2 of them..which required the a new oil pan.
I would bring it to a different, proven shop.

The Time-Sert is the way to go..if you find a shop that has them it is cheaper to have them do it then buying the kit and doing it yourself.

Guys .. he had a time-sert put in and it's still leaking. How did they put it in? I used blue oil resistant loctite on the outside before screwing in the new time-sert.
