My quote on a BMW extended warranty, is it normal?

I know, another extended warranty thread but I really can't find anyone else posting prices from BMW.

Went to my local dealership Saturday and got a quote on a 3yr/36k mile platinum extended warranty. The car is a 2012 w/nav (he said that's the only option that mattered) with 32k miles on it. He quoted me $5,600. The maintenance free warranty is another $2500 but I wasn't planning on getting that again anyway. My stock warranty expires at the end of this month so I have to do something quick. I plan on calling a few other places today to get some other options. So how is that quote compared to other dealerships? Cheap? Normal? High?

Shop around! That price is outrageous! Plus knowing BMW and their history of lack of accountability when their product fails, they will try to deny most of your claims to fix issues that might arise unless you suffer a catastrophic failure. At least that's my experience with them with my 550i sport. Purchased the Platinum extended warranty for $4100 shortly before the 550i went out the factory warranty. Few months after that my transmission started shifting harsh and kept hunting for gears at times. Long story short, my dealer always found every excuse not to resolve the problem and wanted me to pay out my pocket to reprogram the car to see if that would resolve the issue. Ended up trading in the car for my current M3. $4100 dollars down the drain!

I face the same dilemma with my factory warranty about to expire Feb of 2016. Some members here have had good experience with some after market companies, so just look around through the threads.

I think the actual BMW warranty (i.e. the ones that are backed by BMW themselves) pricing is probably pretty static across dealerships. May be worth looking at third party warranties as well. Many dealerships offer them as an alternative and they're typically cheaper. Do you research on them, since some are easier to deal with than others when it comes to making claims.

It's not. They definitely negotiate on it. There were several dealerships that used to advertise on this site for MUCH less than OP quoted. I took advantage of it at the time. BTW, I couldn't justify the extra cost of the platinum EVP over gold....the chances of the nav system breaking seem slim, and there's tons of replacement units floating around on eBay or the forums.

I would tell you to shop around. Talk to the finance manager and negotiate on it -- the dealership stands to make a lot of money on those if you bring the car to them since BMW is reimbursing them for the work provided. It's pretty much guaranteed business for them.

Yea that sounds like a PITA. I've been reading about other companies here in the forum but I'm always sketched about third party companies.

When I was younger I used to DIY everything but I don't feel like being a grease monkey any more. I'll keep a warranty.

Yea, I know theirs a dealer in California that claims to give great prices so I'm gonna call them and see. As far the third party warranties I have read about a bunch on here but idk, I always still seem to think they'll scam me out of something or not pay to replace all the parts. Something like that.

That's what I was thinking but wasn't sure. I know the list price on the warranty is $6,100 and he said he can do $500 off. He quoted me $4,900 for the Gold warranty, he said a new navi is around $5k installed. No idea how true that is. I'll definitely shop around though. I'm assuming dealerships can see in their system every time one of them runs your vin # so they'll probably be able to tell im shopping around for a quote?

I paid about 2,500 for a QualityGuard (Nissan/Infiniti North America) aftermarket warranty. 2 year 24K miles coverage for my 2010 M3. $100 deductible, I had good luck with it, all the small stuff I needed fixed was covered and the work was done at my local BMW dealer.

Get the bmw power train plus. It's the middle ootion. The top option adds navigation and stereo warranty which is a,waste. And yes all dealers are within 600 dollars as that is their wiggle room. I think it's well worth it. Probably looking at 4200 for middle option to add 3 years and 100k total miles on

I'd spend that $5k on tools and equipment for you to work on the car.

It's ganna cost you troubles and fails, frustrations but there is no better feeling than working on your car and building your skill/knowledge.

Thanks for the info, I'll ask about the power train plus option.

Yea, I've done that with previous vehicles and I'll pass on that now. Really don't have time for that either, plus it's my fiance's car not mine so she'd rather just put it in the shop and get it fixed.

I believe the warranty can be refunded at a prorated rate. At least that is what an SA told me when he was going over warranties with my other car.

And while the pricing is pretty standard across most dealerships, there are a few members who can get slightly better deals. Also, depending on your state, insurance carriers even offer a warranty type coverage.

All you need is Gold. Quote for me was 7 years 75k for 4750.

That converts to 3 years and in my case 50,000 miles whichever comes first.

I have a Lithia warranty (via my dealer who is part of the Lithia auto group). I have the top tier plan w/ $200 deductible, paid $3400.

In the 9 months I've had the warranty they've already covered close to $4k in repairs without any hesitation.

I got mine 2 months ago from Warranty Solutions. They are owned by Wells Fargo. I paid $2980 for their comprehensive package which covers the lifetime I have the car and no limit on mileage. The car is 08 6MT with 79k miles. $100 deductible.

I already had my BMW dealer file a claim with them to replace the faulty oil level sensor. SA said it was pretty painless to deal with them.

Glad you had a good experience. I have heard many horror stories with non-factory extended warranty companies.

Not many complaints from this company so may not be a bad deal.

Wait, what?! It covers you for LIFE?! Bumper to bumper? Can you get work done at the dealer? I work for Wells Fargo too so this is particularly intriguing. Have you used the warranty yet?

EDIT: Looks like they are no longer owned by Wells Fargo:
