Winter Oil in Colder Climates (10w60 or 0w40)
Hi All,
I've had my E90 for 2 months now and am in need of an oil change. With winter approaching and my E90 being my DD, I wanted to get the best practice from those of you in New England where your "normal winter temps" are our "coldest of days" here in Virginia. I considered posting this in the oil forum, however with all of you being in NE, this seemed like the best place to get a concentrated answer. Do all of you run the 10w60 despite worries of bearing wear or do you thin out to 0w40 in the winter months to aid in super cold start lubrication? Thanks! |

I run 10W-60 all year round with no problems. I considered 0W-40 during the winter but I figured that BMW wouldn't specify only 10W-60 if you couldn't run it in cold weather.

10W-60 exclusive
I had my E92 M3 for 3 years now and 80K on odometer with original bearings and recently just did first Blackstone report and came back absolutely flawless. Of course keep in mind I don't ever track but will drive it hard here and there. Oil change every 3000K miles.
DD in NYC so I am also aware of the super cold start. Just thought I share my .02 |
