Does anyone know what actually makes the ACCEPTED (rhytmic) tick from the bottom end?

Yeah, not another ticking noise thread. Click back if you find these annoying

So it seams everyones (just about?) engine does this rhytmic, RPM tied, ticking.

I am not talking about:

Upper end injector tick or the random click...pause....click.click...pause...click...cli ck...pause... ticking that is often tied to rod bearing issues (but not always).

I am talking about the rhytmic "tick-tick-tick" that the BOTTOM END of the motor tends to give off.

Linked a YT video at the end of this post, a well recorded one. Mine does the same thing. Its quite loud. Pretty much any time I am either in traffic or driving with large objects (eg: cars, walls, etc) to my left and right, I can hear it ticking away. Its tied to the RPM, as the revs go up, the frequency does too... Like I said, mines very loud, so I am curious if this is "normal".

Does everyones car do this?

Does anyone know the actual cause of this?

cant see youtube vids at work but from your description it sounds like rod bearings, especially if it gets louder as RPM rises..and your M3 being a 2007 production model, does not look promising. Id do a oil sample and see how much lead/copper you got.

Local shop, I'm in the EU so no one anyone on here would know about.

The video I posted above is not mine, but my motor sounds pretty much exactly the same.

Mine does this all the way through, even what fully warmed up.

Plus I have cold start coded out via BPM Stage 2.

FWIW, I NEVER had a sound like that, cold or otherwise. It almost sounds like a pulley or tensioner.

really?

pretty much every video i have watched of a S65 idle has this tick-tick-tick.

this is another clip from a thread posted by someone else, this one has the random tick as well, but ignore that. im talking about the fast paced "tick" from 0:00 to 0:20. best example would be 0:12 to 0:20. thats the "ticking" i am referring to in this thread. fast paced, rhythmic (eg: non-random), tied to rpm.

Thats the engine bro, loads of metallic parts moving around in there so has got to be allowed to make some noise..!

Seriously, I can't hear anything strange there mate. I tend to have a quick sound check of mine as well (like every day efter parking..) but do accept the noises that has been there between the 11-21k miles I had the car.

The "proper" bearing knock I believe most of us is becoming familiar with while there is a spectrum of sweet noises coming out of the S65 which I tend to accept and even enjoy.

Cheers

A lot of people need to understand that audio from a phone only shows so much. These are not "full on-microphones" that catch every frequency.

For example, exhaust videos sound completely different when heard in real life.

So when people are saying, "something is wrong" well no there isn't. Every M3 makes this damn noise.

BTW OP, sounds exactly like mine since I bought it 6 years ago.

My noise is the flywheel, if I leave in neutral and listen to the lower half. I really don't have anything like this clicking, and I'm anal about the sounds coming from the engine bay upper and lower. I'm an '08 with 39k

Its a simple fact that a clicking ticking engine noise easily heard at idle does not come from the rod bearings except when accompanied by heavy rod knocking at 3k rpm.

I love how everyone's initial reaction is rod bearings. It's like a bunch of hypochondriacs reading webMD.

+1 this hysteria is really growing. Put your car on stands. Start it, then lay under it. Thing makes all kinds of clacking racket.

Just went out and took a video for reference. Injector noise makes up all the discernible clicking in my case. I've always thought my s65 ran nice and quiet. I give the mos2 in the sump at least partial credit.

Oil is at temp:

I know one thing...
When my S65 is making a noise that I don't like , I'm usual saying...Like it " NOT" should sound, I'm going straight to Germany because they have done it many times and after they change the bearings those engines run still today and perfect => http://fahrzeugtechnik-mork.de/
As for OP...Who said that his bearings are replaced like it should be ?
Maybe they are worse than the original bearings ?
Who can prove this ?
That's why...

Advice for "everyone" who wants to replace the S65 bearings...

Let the bearing job be done by only the best and who have done it many times , and "only" with the "Necessary knowledge" !
And of course I'm really hoping that OP's bearings are replaced like it should be and with the necessary knowledge ...
But the ticking noises....Mmmmm ..you know of what I'm thinking ..
Believe me...It's worth the investment , otherwise it's just wasting money and trouble x 2 ..."When things go wrong"!
Another thread that deserves to say ...Damn you BMW !
All this trouble ..."With The Ultimate Driving Machine" the S65 a masterpiece... even with replaced bearings we are "no longer" sure if they are better !
And that makes the problem even bigger !
Once you hear a suspicious noise on your S65 and after you rev it to 8K rpm's...Of what are you thinking ...and take a deep breath ?
Exactly , needless to say of what !
Do you have still joy of your car at those moments ?
Needless to answer..
BTW ...I was saying this too ...About 1 year ago !
Hope the best for all of us with our S65 's .

Your's has less of ticking noise than OP's video , and that's for sure !
That's all I can say , The big question is why ?

yeah wow i gotta say that sounds quite a bit better then my motor.

when i put the camera by the lower end of my motor (eg: drivers wheel) it sounds very much like a sewing machine.

thanks for the vid btw, ive watched about 20 or so of the ones on youtube and they are all either knocking / something else wrong with the motor or 'this is my exhaust, hear me roar'... nothing showcasing a properly functioning motor. good reference.

Sounds like vanos to me. Trying to pinpoint where a sound is coming from can be difficult though. https://youtu.be/W9oA-0JRrew

No problem man. This motor has run like a top for me and just going by the registry of failed motors the 2009 seems to be a winner year.

Just got back from a 70 mile freeway trip that definitely reached speeds strenuous on the engine so the oil (Mobil1 0w40/5w50 50/50 blend, 1.5 cans mos2)should be hot and thin. Here's a clip of the motor still running when I got back, sat the phone back behind the driver side wheel so I could rev it a bit:
