Formula - that is nothing. I personally wouldn't worry about. Mine opened up pretty good and then became a little flap that grabbed with every revolution. 6 HC at COTA and it had pulled back a piece exposing the cord. I have to at Discount now waiting for replacement. I will just bring a 5th nitto to every event. The 245/40 and 305/35 18 on the GT3 don't have this issue. Not sure why not.

Yep that set is toast now. No issues other than that little splice 1st or 2nd day in, and it closed up after a few more sessions. Would want nothing to do with them if issue became perceptible from the driver's seat. Yikes. Weird that it seems to be an M3 community thing.

In my case I don't know where I had the tire mounted pre-splice. Know I mounted it at the rear for the next day though and it was gone after a few sessions. Clearly some become more severe over time, others (perhaps most) close up.

Its something in the manufacturing process, and I would think no r-comp is totally immune, just seems like the Nittos had a whole lot more issues.
I also had a small splice on the bfg-r1. nothing to worry about but it was there. It was a solid tire and feel more should consider it.

Nitto seems to want to wash their hands of this long standing problem. They want to give a pro-rated discount, but only on normal tread, not the fact that we run them until they cord. Somehow they get 4/32 of a 6.2/32 tire as only being worth $100. I am moving to Maxxis. I would urge others to think hard about how Nitto has been unable to fix this in almost 2 years, and we keep throwing money at them. The amount of money invested in a weekend, only to have a poorly manufactured tire start to fall apart, is not worth it to me.

Would be willing to switch as more long-term reviews are accumulated. Maxxis' website doesn't show the 275/35/18 as an option at the moment, though.

Maxxis was having trouble keeping up with the initial exodus from Nitto due to the longshoremen problems on the west coast. They could not get their product into the U.S. 275/35-18 is definitely a currently produced size.

BigJae has had the worst I have seen where it opened and the flap was against the rotation of the wheel, so it tore off a chunk that appeared to be ~30mm diameter or better. Mine started on the same path, and I only found it because I was switching to rain tires after the skies opened up. The hunk in this picture can be pulled back on the left side which is totally exposing the cords.

For those folks going the route of a pro-rated credit for a new tire from Discount Tire.....beware. They agreed to give me credit and said the tire was 4/32. I was only going to get $101 out of a $254 tire. I could not understand that math until I watched the guy type it into the Discount Tire computer. It auto populates as 7/32 original tread depth. Nitto website claims 6.3/32. Discount Tire is playing games with tread depth to cheat the customers. I pointed out the real original depth from their site and got him to change it to 5/32 remaining to compensate. All the sudden I got $150 each for two tires. Much better.

Yeah, I had a splice and tear down to the cords about 2"x2". It was pretty bad...way worse than anything I've seen so far. That was right when this splicing thing started to surface here.

Did you contact Nitto or Discount Tire? I go direct to Nitto who does the exchange through any dealer. Nitto will give you an RMA#. Discount is usually the easiest. I've turned in tires that have had just the 2 circumferential grooves in it and paid zero.

The one thing about the Nittos is that they are a decent rain tire and don't require heat cycling. Not sure about the maxxis but I would guess that they are not as good in the rain. Not sure about the heat cycling.

Not a bad deal. Beat the tire down for a weekend, get a splice...new tires! I flip NT01s on the rim after 2-3 days anyway.

I went thru Nitto first. They pretty much flat out refused to do any kind of free swap. I think they must have put the kabash on replacing NT01. Said they don't warranty track tires, will only pro-rate on real tread depth versus the fact that we use them til they cord. I have some to burn through and will try Maxxis. Clearly the Maxxis will not be as good in the wet, but the Nitto are only good in the wet while there is some siping left.

Who did anyone specifically speak to in order to get a free swap and how long ago was that? I buy 8 sets for each car per year. That is a lot of tires. Plus I run the terra grappler on three 4x4 trucks. I spend a lot with Nitto.

What number did you call? I called a CA number. Maybe they changed their policy or something.

Bumping this thread -- received followup e-mail today from Maxxis regarding my previous inquiry a few months ago about availability of 275/35/18 RC-1s (impressive customer serivce!) -- tires will be available on their e-store tomorrow. Will probably go this route once my NT01s bite the dust.
