Engine Oil

The recommended 10w-60 oil for the m3 is a bit pricey. Would it be a bad idea to top off the M3 with 5w-50? Could this affect the digital oil indicator or damage the engine in any way?

You spend 70K on a car with an F1 derived engine and now you are going to compromise it to save $3 on a quart of oil? HELLO???

Shoot the lock off your wallet and purchase the recommended oil. Not for nothing, but what the hell are you thinking?

If you have a problem purchasing the more "expensive" oil, then the M3 was not meant for your budget dude! Thats ridiculous to even ask, isn't that embarassing to even ask for you?

The ONLY way possible to even have to ask that question is, if your stuck in the middle of nowhere and your in serious need of oil, and the local gas stations don't carry the M3s recommended oil. EVEN THEN...I probably wouldn't add a different oil!

Personally, I wouldn't compromise it. I would stick to the recommended oil.

And yes, call your SA and see if he will top it off for you.

I have to agree with response from the boyz on your thread.

What were you thinking?

No offense intended but don't compromise on the grade of oil that you put into that sophisticated and beautifully crafted F1-based engine. You're driving a true performance vehicle that needs to be cared for.

I highly recommend the use of CASTROL 10W-60 Sport Edge oil. Besides, its not like you change your oil every 5000km so it can't be that bad right?

I get my both my rides serviced at intervals of between 10,000km to 12,000km for peace of mind to ensure everything is functioning well.

Treat your ///M with respect and care and she'll be kind to you... As the saying goes "Prevention is better than cure", so use a good reputable oil for your ///M.

Along with the previous posts, I would add that you shouldn't mix oil with different viscosity ratings.

Dude, most dealers will top off the oil for free. If you ask nicely, could probably get a free quart to keep handy if your getting low.

I actually got the "add 1 quart light today" at 6k miles so I went to auto parts store, couldn't find the right oil so took a ride by the dealer to pick up a quart. Not only did they not charge me, they added a quart within 2 minutes and I was on my way. I didn't ask to take one home, although not a bad idea!

can our oil be bought at an auto parts store?
I stopped at an auto zone today and they did not have castrol 10w60 or any synthetic 10w60....
does advance or napa or any of these places have our oil, would like to get a couple of quarts and keep in the garage. save a trip later to dealer ...

virtually no auto parts stores carry that oil. you'll have to order it over the internet or at your dealership's parts counter.

Why do people find it so difficult? Drive down to your dealer and get yourself 2 quarts. Leave one at home and throw the other one in the car. Light comes on +1qt...add it in. Viola. This isn't like 89 octane vs 93 octane...this is oil that is in your engine that is moving at 8000+ rpms at its peak and you're going to get stingy with your oil? Get a 335 and

5W-50, 10w-40 and 10w-50 are only recommended for use in "small" amounts, when you can't get the 10W-60 synthetic. Be sure and stick to the recommendation - its a very expensive engine ...
