Code out EDC
Hi all,
I've searched quite a bit but have not found the exact answer I need: How, exactly, does one "code out" the EDC? I understand it's done through computer software, but that is as far as the descriptions I have found go. Here are my specific questions: 1. What software is needed? 2. What hardware is needed (ECU cable, laptop, etc.)? 3. If there is a step-by-step thread on this, where can I find it? Appreciate any help. Terry |

I mean if you searched and didn't find these well documented answers already then... perhaps you shouldn't be touching this on your own.

Apologies WAKman for being a twat. Had a bad day yesterday and I should not reply unless I have something to add.
Good luck with the tuning/coding. These new cars have a crazy number of computers. It is getting insane. Cheers,

You'll need to install a program on a computer (INPA is popular) that will be able to code your car. You'll need a USB to OBDII connector for the computer to talk to the car.
Even though this other guy is kind of being a dick, he does have a point. If you don't understand the lingo, you gotta learn the trade. Looking at your post history, seems like you've been playing around with cars for a couple decades, so you'll probably be able to pick this up. Unfortunately, the step by step you're looking for may not exist as most DIYs assume you have some basic knowledge on coding. On that point, try searching 'basic bmw coding' tutorials and take it from there. Good luck! |

You'll need to take some initiative and put some dots together. It's not something that is easy to spoon feed.
You need to look up how to code stuff and how to set up the tools you need. Then go back to those threads you found and do what it says. It's fairly easy if you follow instructions. Once you are set up to code, this is all the info you need. https://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1628825 Last edited by tdott; 08-28-2020 at 07:50 PM.. |

1. NCSexpert is required to code it out. Search BMW standard tools 2. A K+DCAN USB cable + Laptop. Bimmergeeks has a good K+DCAN cable that has updated firmware that won't bug out during a DME update with the WinFKP updating program. 3. If you can get your BMW standards tools and NCSexpert working with some other method: Quote:

Thank you to all who are willing to help.
I have been wrenching, racing, building cars and engines for 40+ years, but the computers in today's vehicles (or computers in general) are a mystery to me. It's amazing how difficult it is for those of us born and raised pre-computers to learn them retroactively. So please be patient with my ignorance. I come here to learn about stuff I don't know. I also come here to share my experiences with those who may benefit from them. |

It's always great to accomplish a DIY, sometimes its more convenient to pay a specialist/professional to just do it for us....in reality, we all have our comfort level that we are willing to try ourselves!!! I for one, went from changing my own oil, to changing my own throttle actuators and even install steel brake lines during my ownership and being a member of this great forum!!! However, I am not too confident in myself with coding which I will leave to those who are able and will gladly pay to make sure it works for me. Even with information being share here is a huge plus but executing it...is also something we all attempt at different level of confidence. Goodluck OP. I truly believe there are a lot of great members and sponsors on this site.
