Exclamation Overpaid California Franchise Tax Board

Hi all!

I mailed a check to the California Franchise Tax Board for the minimum $800 annual tax payment due for 2016 last week, but it doesn't look like the check was processed yet.

The deadline for payment is 4/18 and to avoid penalties, I went ahead and paid $800 online today for fear that the check would not get there in time.

What are some avenues I can go about to claim a refund of my other $800?

Thanks all!

I think they look at the postmark so as long as it's mailed by the deadline your good. Would just do a stop payment on the check. Done

Yes, any tax authority (IRS, FTB) usually looks at the postmark date, the payment online part was unnecessary. You might want to call them just to be sure, just so they don't try to come after you for a bounced check fee. Since mail-ins take forever to process (I mailed my paperwork 3 weeks ago and I still haven't gotten my refund, and I know they got it since I sent it CMRR and I got the return receipt back), you have plenty of time to get it done.

I would attempt to cancel the electronic payment since its postmark that determines late or not, and you are still early until Monday

I know some people here have advise canceling the check. I would never ever do that. The man doesn't appreciate it when his checks are canceled even if you've overpaid. There is no refund with the man. And you will get it back on the 2016 taxes. Don't worry about it.
