BMW Naming conventions
It seems like BMW finally got it right with the current lineup of I6 engines and their naming conventions.
With the new Z4 about to come out, they are going to use the same platform as the current E90. If they used the current naming convention, it would be the Z4 2.5i and 3.0i. With the new Z4 though, they will be calling it the Z4 3.0i and 3.0si (as it should... the si is just a further tuned 3.0l). This would only make sense since both would be running 3.0l I-6 engines. This brings up the question. Why didnt they do this with the E90 then? Are they trying to further distinguish the 325 and the 330? If they are, why didnt they bother doing that with the Z4 as well. I was happy that BMW started to follow the actual displacements (with the exception of the 650 and 750)... Not that I care what badge my car would wear (its without one now), but why go with 5006 naming conventions for the same engine(s)? |

I agree. A 3 series car with a 3 litre engine should be badged as 330. The higher ouput version should carry some extra designation such as 330si. I suppose the marketing people felt that fewer people would pay the extra $ for the higher output version if the less expensive version also was designated as a 330. So why bother with the pure approach for the Z4? I dunno. Perhaps they did it because it is a lower volume model, so less concern about distinguishing the two versions.

My 320iS had a 1.8 l motor. It replaced a 320i (and 320iS) with a 2.0 l motor. The 2.0 was cripped by pollution controls such as a thermal reactor as BMW was busy figuring how the best way to meet U.S. standards.
