320D not revving.

My 320D will not rev past around 4700. I have tried in 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The red line doesnt start till 5000. Anyone else have this?

I'm pretty sure the needle used to go in the red before

I've not noticed any drop in power and if this is NOT normal, how do I go about broaching this with the dealer.

Hello, minz runs out of puff around 4700rpm also. The 330d was the same if I remember correctly.

I have never been able to hit the red line.

If you read the technical specs, the rev limiter is at 4700rpm. Why the readline only starts at 5000rpm beyond me ...maybe for looks?

I find though, there isn't much to gain beyond 4000rpm, and I can go alot faster if I just shift:-) so it really doesn't bother me. The car is happy between 2000-4000...

Diesel = lots & lots of low-end torque. Shifting earlier will make you faster.

Do you have to drive with the window down to hear it?

You've lost me there...

but it is a pleasure to wind the window down.
I think if I had any diesel I would have them bricked up.

I've got to agree with MMVI- the sound of the petrol engine revving is just fantastic, windows down or not, especially over 4700rpm!

jeremy tall fella from top gear recently drove a diesel jag around the neuremburgring thingy (is that how you spell it?) and he was complaining of exactly the same thing.

ran out of puff at a little over 4k revs. he did his fastest lap in 9;59.

Actually, you would be very surprised at how sporty the diesel engine sounds when revved.

It's a very different sound to the petrol, inside of a whine, it's more of a rumble or growl but sounds powerful nevertheless.

The 320d is amazingly quiet at idle even on cold mornings or at low-revs. My last car was an Audi A4 1.9 TDI and the engine in the BMW sounds much more refined.

The low-end torque is just wonderful and with only 600kms on my car I am already getting 6.8 l/100kms (expect it to go down as the engine runs in)/ [This is 34.5 mpg US and 41.5 mpg UK ]

you will never find the pulling power of a diesel on a petrol
and the fuel consumption either
diesel power rules.

Hey david,

itīs called "nuerburgring", spelled "ner-berg-ring"

Saw that top gear episode too, it was hilarious.

I am also going for a 320d in 2006, canīt wait.
